I did wait the extra hour for my EDT deadline typo, and collected an extra definition from a fellow PDT-er.  In any case, we're past all posted deadlines and it's time for you to vote!

Below you will find 11 definitions for PALINURUS, only one of which came from a dictionary.  Your job is to reward the creativity of your fellow players by voting for two of the other ten definitions that they made up!

To avoid time zone math typos I'll just note that it's a bit short of midnight on Friday October 3 as I post this, and the conventional 36 hour deadline would be at about noon on Sunday October 5, when I'll be at Lumen Field in Seattle, yelling loudly fo rmy sportsball team.   So the official deadline is the end of the Seahawks/Buccaneers game, shortly after noon Sunday October 5 PDT.  Plus an hour or or so of travel time for me to get home. Or earlier if all submitters have voted before I leave for the game.  Hey, if you're reading this, just vote and don't worry about the deadline.

*** PALINURUS ***

1. A clock designed by Salvador Dali in 1932 with two concentric sets of hands and numbers, rotating in opposite directions.

2. A thing second-hand or worn, chiefly figurative: an unoriginal or overused expression, metaphor, turn of thought, etc.

3. A now extinct European  ox. In spite of earlier beliefs DNA shows it to be only distantly related to modern cattle

4. a measuring device used by Roman soldiers to lay out their camps.

5. Hangnail

6. A temporary podium.

7. a doorwarden to a Greek temple.

8. An instrument for determining the error of a ship's compass by the bearing of celestial objects

9. A rare mineral compound found in volcanic ash, known for its faint bluish sheen and occasional use in specialty glassmaking.

10. A building or structure that has been rebuilt or remodeled many times, so that it no longer resembles its original plan or appearance.

11. An oily liquid found in poison ivy and other plants which causes irritation to the skin; it is the main constituent of Japanese lacquer.

I discover that although \i claimed a DQ it was probably incorrect as the def I know does not appear
FYI
the played word Palinurus is a group oldworld spiny lobsters and for your delectation Panulirus is a genus of spiny lobsters comprising the American forms of the group - both defs are in Merram Webster which is where I found them

I thought I was a DQ but held back on announcing it, and now I'm glad about that. I also know a word palinurus that is neither a spiny lobster nor one of the things defined in the list.

Dan,

Although I haven't had my tea yet, I do not see my definition that you acknowledged receiving.

I'll vote for 2 and 6.

I'll vote for 4 and 10.

That said, like Debbie, I don't see the def that you acknowledged receiving. The reason in my case, however, is that I never sent one. I sent a note that there was an error in converting PDT to EDT. I suspect you saw a message from me in whatever folder you keep round-related emails in and thus added me to the list of submitters in the progress report. When I saw that report, I thought "I don't remember sending a def, but he says I did, so I must have sent one and forgotten." Therefore, I didn't send one. Where does that leave us? I sure don't know!

Those people who interpret Rule 12 (2)

When a round is in progress, if any situation arises which is not disposed of by these Rules or established precedent, the dealer has authority to resolve the question in such manner as seems to him or her equitable.

to mean that the dealer is all-powerful, would say that it leaves us with the situation that you did in fact submit a definition; even there is no reason to doubt that you didn’t. And if so, little though I like dealer points, since Debbie got two, you should also.

Which just shows how silly that interpretation is.

I suspect you saw a message from me in whatever folder you keep round-related emails in

As I mentioned I was away from my computer at the time and just went to my phone and scrolled down the list of people in the email chain(s) associated.  That's why you were included, since you appeared in that account; as did Debbie.  Of course, in this case the recording of names was separated from my spreadsheet where I didn't actually copy the definitions until shortly before posting.

I'm sure there will be further revelations this round causing widespread complaint, but we'll wait a bit for that. :)
