Many and varied are the definitions for distelfink. Please choose your 2 favorites by approximately 32 hours from now: 8pm CDT Thursday May 7 or 1am GMT Friday May 8. The timing will be weird because I am a judge of a "civics bee" for middle schoolers Thursday evening and the proper timing would be right in the middle of judging. I'll post results after I get home.

So, vote! (Closing early is a possibility if all have voted.)

Nancy

Distelfink:

1. Novel; thought-provoking.

2. Common name for any of several birds of the New World sparrow family (Passerellidae) that have red or russet plumage [ < Dutch distelvink, ‘finch’]

3. a gold finch [goldfinches feed on thistle seeds - hence the name of thistle finch]

4. A small scrap of browned onion left in a hot pan.

5. A surveillance operation conducted via wiretap.

6. A stylized bird motif traditional in Pennsylvania German art

7. an automatic brake on a windmill that is engaged when winds exceed a set limit.

8. [obs] A common law doctrine that transfers the real property of a person who has died without heirs to the crown or state.

9. A New Zealand lizard which, in anatomical character, differs widely from all other existing lizards.

10. a compressed deep-bodied percoid food and sport fish (Dichistius capensis) common in shallow water and surf along the coasts of southern Africa.

11. The semicolon.

12. A small handmade toy, typically fashioned from scraps or natural materials.

(Good luck to us all!)

No idea. I'll guess these: 11 and 12 because I read down that far. <G>

Nancy, you acknowledged my definition but I don't see it. Unless I'm having flash amnesia. ???

And frankly, I don't see any that convince me. I'll throw votes without any hope at 5 and 11.

Sorry, Debbie, I screwed up and didn't post it in my haste to get to an appointment. I have already awarded you two dealer points.

Goldfinch and Semicolon have both figured in my AI interactions today for various reasons wholly unrelated to this game.

But the authors of 3 and 11 get serendipitous votes.
