I had some fun with the real definition in this round, which was 7, the Middle Irish word for a fortified enclosure: but less fun than I had hoped.

I submitted that as a def for tappen
in round 3152, about 10 weeks ago, and it proved quite popular. I thought that this time around, players might point out that it had been recycled, which would dampen its attractiveness. In that I was quite wrong. There were the four players who voted for it in 3152, but not this time; either they did not notice the repeat, or were too polite to say anything. But two players voted for it a second time, along with five others, giving me a D7. Despite its defining one recondite word in terms of two other recondite words. Or maybe because of it: the Johnsonian network effect.

My humble apologies to Tim Lodge, whose def fell off the bottom of my spreadsheet, as data is apt to do. At least my error was to lose one
definition, and not 16,000 Covid test results. This incident renews my determination to come up sometime soon with a successor to Coryphæus that is suitable for the 21st century. Dealer points for Tim, of course.

John Barrs’ burp/yawn
portmanteau trails the OED’s winning score with 5 unnatural points, and so the deal in Round 3173 is his.
