We have before us a dozen defs for BOODLE FIGHT, one of which is legitimate and the rest of which are illegitimate (in the nicest possible way).

Please vote for two before the deadline, which is 36 hours from now.

1.       A punning contest.

2.       A contested will; an inheritance dispute.

3.       An intense disagreement over a trivial issue.

4.       A groundless argument; a fuss over nothing.

5.       In aeronautics, 125% of the minimum take-off speed.

6.       The, usually successful, theft of the blessings of a cargo-cult delivery.

7.       A rite in which new military recruits engage in a mock battle against experienced soldiers; any lopsided contest.

8.       A meal where food is placed on top of a table lined with banana leaves, and diners eat standing and without cutlery.

9.       A kind of reverse auction where two or more potential suppliers are trying to win a contract by offering extra features or benefits.

10.   A children’s game in which blindfolded players attempt to identify household objects by touch while others shout misleading clues.

11.   A protracted legal dispute over the distribution of an estate, particularly involving multiple heirs contesting the terms of a will or the validity of inheritance claims.

12.   A lively and communal dining experience originating from the Philippines; "boodle" refers to the abundance of food, while "fight" signifies the spirited and competitive nature of the meal. This tradition is often associated with camaraderie, celebration, and a sense of togetherness among friends and family.

Deadline is 9am Thursday 2 October NZT, or:

Wed, 1 Oct 2025 1:00 p.m.

Avoiding the obvious senses of fight and boodle, I vote for 1 and 10.

Hi Shani,

Definitions 3 and 4 seem similar. One vote to each.

Cheers,
Hugo

I'll try the seemingly identical 2 and 11.

Identical in sense but not in diction. Dealers are obliged to stay close to the wording of their source. And only one of them reads as if it might have come from a real dictionary.
