Below you will find 15 purported definitions of CARATCH, only one of which is true.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to vote for two of the fake definitions submitted by your fellow players, thus rewarding them for their creativity.  You should (but are not required to) avoid voting for the real definition, which may gain you points, but deprive your players of glory.  Not very sporting. :)

I'll set the deadline in 34 hours (earlier if all submitters have voted), at 8 am PST on Friday February 13, which is 11 am EST, 4 pm UTC/GMT, 5 pm CET, and Saturday 5 am NZDT.

*** CARATCH ***

1. [Chiefly Scot.] a simple switch gate used for sorting livestock, esp. sheep, allowing a farmer to sort them from a single channel into two separate channels or pens according to sex, age, etc.

2. A neckwear-controlling device, originally worn by wealthy English gentlemen to secure the folds of their cravats.

3. A clinker-built boat used traditionally in the Shetland Islands, designed to be rowed or sailed.

4. A thin ridge of compacted soil left behind when heavy rain drains off a sloped field.

5. a crack in the surface rock that forms where two or more tectonic plates collide.

6. A toxic pool left behind by strip mining operations.

7. A leash for a falcon or hawk.

8. irritable, prickly.

9. a curved blade used for cooking [Arab.]

10. A place of confinement especially for lawbreakers.

11. The tribute or poll-tax levied by the Turks on their Christian subjects.

12. In curling, a technique to throw the stone with an extra strong curl effect.

13. Obs. A kind of toilet-water made in Käerch (Luxembourg) [ < Lux. Käerchwaasser]

14. Fatigue arising from the early care and training of a young animal, esp. a puppy.

15. A unit of weight equivalent to 5.6 ounces, historically used in the sale of root vegetables (defunct)

I've often complained that surveys ought to offer a "none of the above" option on every question. I'd have chosen it here.

I know 1 exists, but I've never heard it called a caratch - but maybe it is.

1 and 11, please.

Best wishes,  Tim B

#11 and #15 please as being sufficiently obsolete

Hi Dan,

I managed to reduce my list to just 4 picks. But the rules say I can't have four votes. So, let's just throw darts at the remaining shortlist and then I am left with:

2. A neckwear-controlling device, originally worn by wealthy English gentlemen to secure the folds of their cravats.

7. A leash for a falcon or hawk.

Cheers,
Hugo

I narrowed it down to three, and surely picked the wrong two of them: 3 and 4.

20 minutes before the deadline we still have 4 submitters left to vote.

I'll be commuting to work and attending a few meetings, I'll post results about 3 hours after the original deadline at 11am PST / 2pm EST / 1900 UTC.
