ROUND 3679 -FLUBDUB RESULTS

Hello all!

All but two of those who submitted a definition have voted, but the deadline has passed, so I am closing this round - if only because I will be admitted to hospital tomorrow, so if I don't do this now, it might take much too long.

The real definition for FLUBDUB, as found on dictionary,com, is number 10, the slang term for pretentious nonsense, as guessed by 4 of you. I had to combine this with Tim Bourne's submission: "A sentence devoid of meaning; nonsense". There were no other problems so far, and I hope I got all the scores right.

We have two winners. Both Paul Keating and Shani Naylor got 5 "unnatural" points. I can't find the rolling scores for round 3678 in my mail, but Paul was ahead in the 3677 rolling scores and he scored more in round 3678, so I'm pretty sure that Shani can heave a sigh of relief as Paul gets ready to deal round 3680.

There is uncertainty about the deal succession because of the absence of the needed rolling scores report.  It is late at night for me and, without casting doubt on Hugo’s assessment, I ask players’ indulgence for time to confirm it. I will announce a new round (or disclaim dealership) within the allowed 24 hours, that is, before 21h50 UTC on Monday 7 September.

I'm sure you'll figure it out yourself, but 3674 is the round that will drop, where you scored 1 and Shani scored 5.

So that gives 4 points in your favor added to the 4 point advantage from round 3678.

Sadly, it is very serious, and I guess now is as good a time to let you all know as any.

As you probably remember, I was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2022. After several long hospital stays, for chemo, but also an unplanned extra one to take out a cancerous kidney, I was given donor stem cells in February 2023. Since then, I have been doing fine ... until February 2026. At that time, during one of the regularly scheduled routine checks, bad blood values were seen. Follow up examinations showed that my leukemia had returned.

I have since been in treatment again, but so far, all that the doctors have achieved is to prevent the cancer from getting worse. They have not been able to reduce it sufficiently so that a new stem cell donation is possible. (The laymen version of my treatment is like fixing a leaking faucet: you don't mop the floor before the leak is fixed. Stem cell donation is like mopping the floor).

After a lot of ups and downs (that I have described on my blog, if anyone is interested), I now qualify for a clinical trial for an experimental new treatment. To give you a good idea of my situation: this is the kind of trial that, for moral reasons, is only done on patients for whom there is no promising regular treatment left. So that's where I am. However, I think this trial is promising, so I still remain positive ... most of the time.

The funny thing is: I still feel good and healthy. Well, apart from some side effects of the chemo that I had last week as preparation for this week. But that does not reflect my real health. Without treatment, the leukemia will kill me in a matter of months or even weeks. I only feel good because the cancer was detected in an early stage, and because multiple chemo rounds have so far prevented it from growing further.

So bottom line: I feel good, but lab readings tell me I'm dying. I probably won't feel good in a few days, as side effects of the treatment. But I hope that the treatment will be successful, in which case I should still have a few more years left on this earth.
