If any of you have ever raced using US Sailing Portsmouth Numbers, they exist because of the efforts of Darline Hobock.  Below is a request for donations to create a perpetual trophy in her honor.  Intent is to present this trophy to the highest co-ed finishers at the Alter Cup.

If this trophy had been in place in 2007, I think John & Tiffany would have their name on it (3rd overall).

Darline Hobock

DARLINE HOBOCK

From the 2003 C.R.E.W. Award Citation:
Since 1974, when she first joined the Portsmouth Numbers Committee, Darline’s commitment to US SAILING and to everyone she met at these meetings has never wavered. She was the person you could count on to make the extra effort. She devoted hours of her time entering data in her Portsmouth Handicap program. She administered the Golden Anchor Program for the Multihull Council year after year. As the web liaison for the Multihull Council, she spent countless hours updating the website.

Respect is her watchword! Fellow Multihull Council members have witnessed her calm the stormy waters during a raging multihull meeting by using her candor, coupled with honest, constructive criticism.

She has always exceeded expectations, and what better example than through the administration and publishing of Portsmouth numbers for more than 25 years. She was also a voice of reason and looked for win-win solutions. US SAILING was lucky to have such a devoted volunteer.

Now we want to honor Darline with a Perpetual Trophy in her name.

I am reaching out to all those who knew and loved and worked with Darline Hobock, to contribute to a Perpetual Trophy in her name.  We will need to raise $3000 in her name towards the maintenance of this trophy.

From the Draft Minutes of the Multihull Council Meeting held October 2010:

"Ms. Schaefer introduced the recommendation of creating a "Darline Hobock" Perpetual Trophy. The cost of construction and a US Sailing 'maintenance' fee would require a fundraising campaign for $3,000. Gordon Isco has agreed to be the builder. Ms. Schaefer has agreed to Chair the fundraising committee. All checks should be made out to US Sailing with a notation that funds go to “Darline Hobock Perpetual Trophy”.  The MHC agreed with John Williams that a Perpetual Trophy should be “significant, enduring and worthy.”  Following discussion regarding the Deed of Gift, Ms. Schaefer motioned that the trophy be awarded to the highest finishing male/female team in the Alter Cup Championship. The motion passed."

I am beginning the fundraising campaign, here and now.  Many people pledged the funds towards this purpose.  Please get out your check book and put your pledge in writing now. Make out your check payable to US Sailing with the notation that funds got to “Darline Hobock Perpetual Trophy”.

Lee Parks, US Sailing instructed me that I should collect the monies donated towards this purpose.

Mail your checks to:             Deborah K. Schaefer

                                              2131 N. Camp Perry Rd. E.

                                              Port Clinton, Ohio 43452

I would like to collect as much as possible before the US Sailing AGM October, Wednesday, October 26, 2011.

Sincerely,

Deborah K. Schaefer

Jim,

Maybe it's because 2010 was a tough year for me.  I don't remember hearing what happened to Darline.  I did a quick google on here and found that she passed away last year.  Here is a nice write up on her.

I actually had some coorespondance with Darleen years ago when I was tricking out my H20 with a Tornado spinnaker and support the comptip with stays.  I really appreciated her service to keeping the Portsmouth numbers updated.  I'm sure it was a tedious and thankless job.

Our fleet and division are direct beneficiaries of her service.

I want to recommend that AustinCats make a donation for this Trophy.  I would suggest we vote on this at our next meeting.  However, looks like they want to get numbers by Oct 26.  Perhaps our officers can make the executive decision amongst themselves.  I would like to recommend $250 towards the trophy.

Bo,
Can you take the action item to review this with the officers?

Thanks,
Mike Rohrer
