Call for short papers for a roundtable on "Maintaining Sanity in Graduate School"

Increasingly, graduate students have taken on an overwhelming amount of responsibilities. In addition to attending seminars and completing coursework, graduate students often serve as primary instructors or teaching assistants. To make matters worse, a discourse of scarcity persists in the academic world which leaves students fearful that few positions will be available for them when they graduate. As a result, students often feel that their only hope is to be as competitive as possible, sacrificing personal relationships and friendships to focus on coursework, teaching duties, and publications.  This roundtable hopes to attract papers exploring the responsibilities of graduate students – as well coping strategies – from a variety of critical perspectives. Papers should provide a critical examination of graduate student responsibilities and what strategies are crucial for success and maintaining ‘sanity’. Potential questions to be asked and answered include, but are not limited to: What responsibilities have you assumed within your department? What challenges have you faced in attempting to address these responsibilities? What coping mechanisms help you make it through the day, and which of these coping strategies do you feel that other graduate students should adopt? Should the exploitation that graduate students often experience be a point of concern? If so, in what ways should graduate students address these issues (and should it be graduate students who take these issues on)?

Papers should be limited to a total of 1500 words.
