I was thinking of purchasing a Linksys WRT1900ACS in the US and setting up and bringing it with me when I move to Thailand, will it work their, are the bandwidths used illegal in Thailand? I'm not sure if there are differences between the two countries, or should I be purchasing a unit locally in Thailand? I am still trying to decide on which service to use, but based on location in Bangkok, I might be forced to use True, and whatever speed I can get from them, I am hoping they offer enough speed/reliability for a pretty good connection back to my Sonicwall TZ215 VPN in the Eastern US (using the remote software utility).
The wifi transmits on various channels. The channels that are allowed vary between countries because the frequency is sometimes allocated for other purposes. to be legal it is important that you manually set the channel of the wifi to a frequency not used for another purpose.
I discovered this because of a related problem. I purchased a new router in Thailand but my laptop was purchased in the US. When I attempted to set up my new router, it would not see my home WiFi or any others nearby. I went nuts for a few days trying to figure out why this was happening. Turned out, my router had randomly assigned one of those channels restricted in the US as my default and my US purchased computer had those channels "Locked out" and could not see them. Simply changing the channel solved the problem.
So if I get this right, the WRT1900ACS should be fine with all its channels, I would just be missing higher channels that are usable in foreign markets? Or are some of those lower channels illegal to operate on in Thailand? I also wonder if using OpenWRT would give me some of the those higher channels when I get there....hmmmm.
Had a spare one in the UK, decent mid range well known brand, so well known i can't remember it!!!!, anyway the gfs families gaff is large and got fed up with skype dropping out she wouldn't run a lan line around the house so sent her my spare one over and it worked fine, no dramas.
I ordered it anyway, hopefully it works, Linksys is selling it for $199 plus a free range extender (RE4100w), so worth buying it even if I don't bring it with me. I could always bring my trusty Linksys E4200v1 with me, and install the WRT1900ACS here in my home in the US, the E4200v1 also works with OpenWRT I believe. Thanks guys, still interested in the legality of US channels running in Thailand though, not trying to cause any trouble when I get there.
The router was incredibly useful during our weeklong trip. I was able to download and send work emails, I sent iPhone messages, used WhatsApp to chat and call, posted on Facebook and on Instagram. It was especially helpful in getting around town. I used google maps to help us walk to and from places on the island, but I also used it to make sure the taxis were taking us in the correct direction. The most impressive function of the router was its ability to let me post on Instagram from Pandanon Island. It was a small island in the middle of the ocean and the router worked!!
Compared to other rentable wifi providers, Vision Global is very reasonably priced and has fantastic and prompt customer service. I plan on using their routers for my future travels and will absolutely be recommending their services to everybody I know who plans on staying connected while abroad. Thanks Vision Global!
Well, the sensible thing is to discuss the possibilities with your company. But if you prefer to just let sleeping dogs lie, then you could choose to work remotely from anywhere while hiding your location.
I recommend using the app for your operating system (e.g. Windows or MacOS) and not one of the apps that works with your internet browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.). That way it will take care of your entire internet connection and not just your browser activity.
Using a travel router has some additional advantages. For instance, it also acts as a WiFi signal repeater, which can help ensure a solid connection at your remote work location. One vacation apartment I stayed at had good WiFi downstairs but poor WiFi upstairs; by placing the travel router near the stairs, the internet now reached both areas.
You can check out their service packages here, which have the advantage of being just a one-time set-up fee. For most users, I believe their cheapest package (Economy Light) will be absolutely fine. This is the package I also used myself, while sharing the connection between two heavy internet users without issues. (Do keep in mind the limiting factor is usually the local internet speed in your travel location.)
I have a work laptop which has wireguard and zscaler. I am also blocked from switching location services off on the laptop. I have previously used the travel router along solution and this did not work good previously due to an issue with the router connecting to NordVPN, it had leaked my location. Do you think keepyourhomeip solution would work for me?
Hello Marek,
I use the keep your home IP option. I connect my laptop directly to the mini travel router provided via ethernet. I turn off wifi by putting it in airplane mode this also turns of blue tooth. Is there any other way I can be tracked
Hello Marek, what are the disadvantages of using the travel router option? Is the issue that it would still be using a public vpn and this can still be tracked by my workplace, as you mentioned in option 1 about public vpns?
Thank you Marek for this fantastic article you wrote. It is incredibly insightful and informative. It inspired me to purchase the business package from keepyourhomeip, and I must say, it has been a game-changer for me. Thank you so much for sharing this! ?
Hi, thanks for the useful guide how does the two-router private vpn method you mentioned compare to using the second method when combined with NordVPNs dedicated IP rather than the public one. Is it an equal level of privacy/security or is the two router method still better for some reason?
Solution 3 solved my issue. I was traveling and working for 2 months with my economy light VPN package from KeepYourHomeIP and it worked great! Their technical stuff is highly skilled and helpful. I can recommend both their products and services.
Update: so I have switched the mini router into repeater mode and connected it to my WiFi router. I turned off WiFi on my work laptop and connected the mini router via the ethernet cable. Now when I search my location on Google it shows my fake location not my actual location. So I may have solved my problem
Hello! I have the same problem with gps location. It is turned on and I cannot turn it off. Anyone with the same problem? Did you buy the 2 travel routers for 30 euros each? Is the connection speed quick enough?
I just have 1 mini router. I turned it into repeater mode and connected it to my main router via the admin panel. I then turned wifi off on my laptop and connected the mini router to my laptop via ethernet. This way my location on Google maps on my laptop says I am in the place my vpn is connected to
I only have 1 mini router, the other is my main WiFi router. So I went onto the gl.iNet admin panel and turned the mini router into repeater mode and connected it to my WiFi. I then turned off WiFi on my laptop and connected the mini router via ethernet cable. Now when search my location on Google maps it shows my vpn location not my actual location
Hi Marek, I got the GL.iNet GL-MT1300 travel router for my work. I need to mask my location . My company already uses a VPN on the work laptop. How do I connect to this router to achieve what I wanted. Thanks in advance.
I have the same problem. My actual location shows on Google maps and my location is switched on in settings. This is controlled by the company. My IP address is fake however my actual laptop location is not
Hi Marek,
Thank you very much- this has been superbly helpful!! Question- if I am moving around different locations/hotels every few days in another country, In order to keep masking my location, do I have to connect the gl creta to connect to wifi always first, then tether work computer with it? aka- will the nord configuration stay there? Hopefully I do not have to download/set up the nord udp server .ovpn file everytime?
Great article, quick question I work for financial services and want to work abroad outside UK for 3 months. I have work laptop and using this travel router plus nord vpn will show my location in UK. Are there any other indicators that my employer can pick it or I have to be extra careful. My work laptop has their vpn too on my work laptop. Also i would be taking call from my work laptop. What do you suggest
Hi Marek
Thank you for sharing and spot on. I was looking for information on this and your article provided an amazing explanation.
Now my question is my company is using a corporate and I want to work remotely during my trip. I didnt want my employer to know. So I have to purchase a small travel router and NordVPN or just tue travel remote only ?
Thank you. I will get both than and will set it up accordingly. I will subscribe to NordVPN and will run it on travel router so it wont clash with my corporate / company VPN in my laptop. I will connect my laptop using the travel router so the change of location will not be captured by the employer. I have ordered the travel router. I will check to subscribe NordVPN.
Hi Marek,
They said we can connect via Wifi but also provided ethernet cord. Just want to make sure I purchase the correct travel router and VPN program so I can connect to Georgia server (Atlanta area) since that is one of the approved locations
Would this device work if I am using a company laptop ? I am required to have a hard wire connection. I am wanting to travel and work overseas without telling my employer where I am. I will also need a VPN. Please let me know if you think this would work for me. Excellent article!
Hello!
This was so helpful, so I already have a company VPN installed in my phone/computer I have to log into every morning, I would like high speed so if I get the larger vpn router is it used the same as the small travel sized one, I just plug it in and it connects to the wifi and then I connect to that?
