Dear Members,
Semester 2 is well underway and all signs point to it being one of our biggest Semesters yet! There is lots happening both above and below the water, so make sure that you're keeping up to date with all the recent news and upcoming events!
Courses
Our third Open Water Course of the Semester kicked off last week, with the students getting excited to be heading down the Peninsula next weekend October 22nd/23rd. A limited amount of beds are available to members if you would like to join us on the Saturday night for a BBQ, please email in...@divelatrobe.org.au if you would like to reserve a spot. There will be plenty to see on the weekend with the OWs experiencing life underwater for the first time, whilst our Rescue Diver students will provide excellent entertainment on the surface as they complete their assessments that were postponed due to poor conditions last weekend.
We've had an overwhelming amount of interest in courses this Semester, prompting us to schedule a fourth(!) Open Water Course in November. Put November 19/20th in your diary as another member weekend on the Mornington Peninsula. There are still two places remaining on this course if you have any friends/family that have been wanting to join you underwater. More details at www.divelatrobe.org.au/OW
As always, if you are interested in a particular course, send an email to in...@divelatrobe.org.au as Continuing Education courses may be arranged over the summer break based on demand and instructor availability.
Wilsons Promontory Trip
The interest has been staggering for the Wilsons Prom Trip, with 18 members currently booked on to attend. Those that have paid their deposits will be receiving more information over the weekend/early next week. There are still two places remaining, and deposits must be received by Sunday October 16th to secure one of these. www.divelatrobe.org.au/events
Dive for a Cure
The 'Phil's Dive for a Cure' fundraising event was created in memory of a well-respected member of the Tasmanian dive community and family man, Phil Malkin. Phil's final wish was to hold an event to raise the much needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation in gratitude for the continued and dedicated support received by Phil and his family throughout the battle.
Dive La Trobe will once again host a day of diving in support of this event, this year joined by Phil's family - Tach, Charlea and Beau. Join us for a day of fun under Rye Pier, with a Scavenger Hunt, scallop dives, BBQ and more - all whilst helping to raise funds for this wonderful cause.
All proceeds from equipment hire and registration will be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation.
When: Sunday, November 6th. Registrations from 9am.
Where: Rye Pier, Mornington Peninsula.
What: $10 registration fee, includes diving and a BBQ lunch.
How: You can help support by joining the event, assisting on the day and spreading the word to all Dive La Trobe members!
Great Victorian Fish Count and Fish Identification Project
Don't know your Shaw's from your Ornate Cowfish? Didn't even know that there was a difference between an Old Wife and a Boarfish? There is an event brewing at Dive La Trobe that's just for you!
Put the evening of Thursday 24th of November in your diary, as well as Saturday 26th of November. Stay tuned for more details to come!
In the meantime, register to attend The Great Victorian Fish Count: How Many Fish in the Sea? here. This evening will give an overview of the GVFC over the past 10 years, as well as presentations on several other marine projects running in Victoria at the moment. Members will be heading out for dinner together following the event.
TUDC Come to Visit
Tas Uni Dive Club will be coming over to visit us on the weekend of November 25th-27th. There will be plenty of boat and shore diving (including the GVFC mentioned above). All members will be welcome to stay on the Bellarine Peninsula together.
Put the dates in your diary, and stay tuned for more information!
AGM
Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday November 3rd at 6:30pm. There will be a free BBQ for members and it would be great to see as many faces there as possible.
