Hi there,

Although I could find information about markdown support in the DITA OT documentation, it is still not clear to me what exactly is supported with regards to markdown.

We'd like to be able to convert markdown files to DITA and wonder if we can use the DITA OT for this purpose.

This section says, that you can add markdown topics to DITA maps (so no conversion):

MDITA seems to go in the same direction (no conversion to DITA):

But both link to this section in their related information at the bottom:

Here we get information about what markdown topics look like after a conversion to DITA (using pandoc?).
So is this done by the DITA OT. And if yes, can DITA OT users have access to the conversion result or is this merely done in the background?

If pandoc is used for the conversion, it must be in combination with some kind of extension (Lua filter) as "dita" is not one of their standard formats: https://pandoc.org/

Any hints are welcome!

Thanks,
Jens

Hi

Yes, you can convert Markdown to DITA, but you have to convert a Markdown ”map” that references Markdown ”topics”, or single Markdown ”topic” at a time. Pandoc style multiple files is not currently supported by topic.

Hi Jens,

Yes, DITA-OT converts Markdown to DITA in the background when generating other output formats like HTML or PDF, but if you prefer to maintain this content in DITA in the future, you can generate DITA output by passing the --format=dita option on the command line.

This converts all input files (both DITA XML and Markdown) to “Normalized DITA” as described here: https://www.dita-ot.org/dev/topics/dita2dita.html.

Your question suggests we may need to highlight this application scenario in the documentation.

Hope that helps,

Roger
