Error: Target "DITA" does not exist in the project "DOST".

I'm new to all the tools at this point.  I'm using the DITA command to transform .DITA files to Markdown_github format.  I'm getting the above error message and nothing is transformed.  Turning on debug does not provide any messages that help me determine what is wrong.  I haven't been able to find what the error message means.  Can someone help?

What command do you use to run DITA-OT? That sounds like you’re trying to run Ant target ’DITA’ which has not been defined anywhere.

Using the command found in the documentation:  The input file is my ditamap file name and format=markdown_github. 

dita-ot-dir/bin/dita --input=input-file --format=format options

I'm converting from .dita files to markdown.  As this format is part of the DITA Toolkit 3.1, I didn't think I needed to do anything with the plugins.
