Hello

I am new to DITA, so forgive me if this is an overly newbie question.

I am tyring to find an open source or free DITA editor, for content creation.

If I understand correctly, DITA-OT is only useful if you already have dita content, and then want to output this to a specific format, eg, pdf.

How do you create the dita input? Are there any good tools for doing this?

Thanks

Hi Anton,

it does not exist. The most used editor is <oXygen/> XML. There is a plugin for Sublime Text, called Exalt, written by Eero Helenius, who is one of the major DITA developers, but it has only a very basic DITA support. There is a DITA extension for the Komodo IDE, but it is abandoned and has a very basic DITA support, too.

So, if you are willing to use DITA, you have to use <oXygen/> XML or another commercial editor like XMetaL or FrameMaker.

Greetings,
Stefan

I have written several articles about things that I have learned about DITA while creating the software manual(s) for an internal product.

This one http://blog.artifact-software.com/tech/?p=206 is about using Eclipse as a free DITA authoring tool.

Powerful on its own and if your software development team is using Eclipse, this will fit very well.

Hi Ron,

That looks pretty cool!

Would you consider writing up a blog post for Eclipse noobs that explains how to set up the basics for DITA editing? Running DITA-OT and the repository stuff could be separate.

As for the question at hand, you guys may laugh but I moved from FrameMaker to NotePad++. Too much time was spent wrestling with FM, while NotePad is fast, free, simple, and just lets me do anything. There are some plugins for checking XML syntax, formatting, etc.

http://blog.artifact-software.com/tech/?tag=dita is a link to all of my DITA musings.

It may include some of what you are looking for.

If you need more perhaps I can update an existing note or make a new one.

Hello Anton,

please have a look at our huge list and feel welcome to contribute more tools: DOCTALES - DITA Tools

The whole DOCTALES page might be a good starting point for your DITA carreer.

Greetings,
Stefan
