Director Chiaki J Konaka chose Duvet as the opening theme after seeing a translation of the lyrics and thinking that they seemed very Japanese. it was at the time unusual for an anime to have a theme song entirely in English.
The song was selected by the director Chiaki J. Konaka, after the band Bôa signed with the Japanese record label Polystar despite Boâ being a British band with the main singer, Jasmine Rodgers being only half-Japanese and only speaking a "really little bit" of the language.
As the opening theme of Serial Experiments Lain, this song is now deeply associated with the TV show but also the theme presented in it despite having little to do with the cyberpunk or sci-fi themes.
The above three-and-a-half minute video is a new official video for the song, released earlier in October 2023. An article by Variety explains that "Duvet" has remained popular online, with seven million streams per week so far this year, as well as being used as the soundtrack for over 250,000 TikTok videos. It was also sampled in the song "und prueba" by the Spanish urban-trap singer and producer Yung Beef, below.
"The Ballad of Chasey Lain" is a song by American comedy rock band Bloodhound Gang. It was released in February 2000 as the third single from their third studio album, Hooray for Boobies (2000). The song reached number one in Iceland and became a top-20 hit in Austria, Finland, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
According to a band interview to the BBC, the song was written after lead singer Jimmy Pop had seen pornographic film actress Chasey Lain in a clothing ad. When questioned if the infatuation was real, he commented "No. No. What happened was, I saw her in a clothing ad, and I was like, 'she's really cute'. So I'm not sure if we started 'researching' Chasey Lain but she came out and performed on our record with us, and her arms were like, hairier than mine. And she was dumber than that table".[1]
The music video features the band performing the song on stage, and the director and the film crew are all naked women. Throughout the course of the video, the band is apparently becoming distracted by the naked women; Jared Hasselhoff even falls off the stage while distracted. At the end of the video, Jimmy Pop complains about being distracted and an obese man eating food in a sloppy and disgusting manner is shown, implying that the band was distracted by him, rather than the women.
The Prince-penned "Manic Monday" was the first song The Bangles heard coming from a car radio, but "Eternal Flame" is closest to Susanna's heart, perhaps because she sang it in "various states of undress."
