Commanders and Comrades,
At the 126th National Convention, delegates adopted an amendment to the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Bylaws changing the official title of Post Service Officer and District Service Officer to Benefits Advisor. This change becomes effective thirty (30) days from the adjournment of the National Convention.
This notice is provided to ensure that everyone is aware of the change and are taking steps to review their documents for accuracy. Please read carefully:
Bylaws Updates Not Required at This Time
We have already been asked whether Posts and Districts need to amend and resubmit their bylaws for review and approval. The answer is no. That is not the intent of this reminder. Even if a local set of bylaws has not yet been updated, the National Bylaws always supersede all other levels. Only Posts that are preparing to submit other changes need to include this as well.
Action Required – Materials and References
The purpose of this reminder is to ensure that all items under your control, training materials, websites, social media pages, forms, documents, SOPs, policies, directories, catalogs, and other official references are updated to reflect the new title. Districts and Posts should ensure these changes are completed in a timely manner so that uniformity is maintained throughout the organization.
Here at Department Headquarters, we will be updating our own documents accordingly. Should you find any reference that we have missed, please let us know so that we can correct it as well.
Note: This change affects only the title of the positions. Any existing materials remain valid from a content standpoint until they are updated.
