IDEA District Cooling Forum Meeting Agenda

Chair: Joe Hoose, Cool Systems.

Objective: Peer exchange for district cooling issues, such as rate design, piping, metering, thermal storage, system optimization and water use.

We would like to continue the strong interest in District Cooling and increase the value of this forum with a pre-meeting brainstorming of topics that would be of value to the group.  While putting together the meeting agenda it would be great to have feedback from the District Cooling community at large.  The following are subjects that may be of interest to date.  Please respond or send me your thoughts!

EMICOOL District Cooling Efficiency Report

EMICOOL has published a report on “Sustainability in Hot Arid Climatic Regions Exploring Improvement of District Cooling Plant Energy Efficiency and Water Conservation” since the last meeting. What are the group’s thoughts?

Leak Detection for DC Systems

·         Members have posted "what leak detection systems are available for new DC piping distribution systems?” since the last meeting.

Looping the Chilled Water Distribution Piping

·         What are the benefits of looping a Chilled Water Distribution piping system?  What are the draw backs to looping a CHW distribution system?

Remote Thermal Energy Storage

·         How often is remote thermal energy storage being employed?  What are the benefits?  What are the drawbacks?

ASHRAE TC6.1 Chilled Water Plant Design Update

·         ASHRAE has decided to add a new chapter to the ASHRAE Handbook on Central Plant Design.  An IDEA member Steve Tredinnick is the ASHRAE Central Plant Subcommittee Chair and it may be of interest to discuss collaboration and to see where the chapter stands to date.

IDEA District Cooling Best Practice Guide

·         More than three years in development the guide is dedicated to the growth and utilization of district cooling as a means to enhance energy efficiency, to provide more sustainable and reliable energy infrastructure, and contribute to improving the global environment.  This publication was published a few years ago and is now in active distribution.  How is it being received, what do we like, and what could be better.

Heat Metering Standard

·         ASTM WK37952-New Specification for equipment and instrumentation of heat metering technologies; Long overdue, the ASTM is in development of a National thermal energy metering standard specification and testing methodology.  This should bring some attention and credence to the chilled water metering and sub-metering so important in district cooling distribution systems. Does anyone have an update on the Standard?

Managing Delta T

How are members managing the Delta T of their loops?  Are we monetizing the value of delta T on the pumping and plant operation to hold consumers accountable?

Chilled Beams and District Cooling

·         Chilled Beams are getting attention in the design community.  Has it gone viral?  They have significantly different operating parameters than standard cooling terminal equipment.  How will this affect the district cooling distribution systems?
