Dear District 5 Residents-

Here is another installment of news that affects the best district in Athens:

ACC FACTS

·       The average flow of treated wastewater at the Water Reclamation facilities was 10.3 MGD.

Breakdown by plant-North Oconee 5.5 mg/d; Middle Oconee 3.0 mg/d;Cedar Creek 1.8 mg/d

·       During the month of June, the landfill took in 6,655 tons: 4,463 tons of waste was buried and 2,192 tons recycled. Leaf and limb tonnage amounted to 465.84 tons.

·       For FY14, the landfill took in 80,624 tons: 55250 tons were buried and 25375 tons recycled.

·       Between 07/02/14 and 07/08/14, the Leaf & Limb crew collected 78.29 tons of material for the ACC Compost and Mulch program.

ACTV

Don’t forget that Charter Communications has moved ACTV from channel 7 to channel 180 and will be grouped with The University of Georgia’s channel 15 (moving to channel 181) and the Clarke County School District’s channel 16 (moving to channel 182).

AIRPORT

The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently notified Athens-Ben Epps Airport that funding through the national Essential Air Service (EAS) program would be terminated as of September 30, 2014 and the EAS carrier - SeaPort Airlines - may terminate service on or after this date. SeaPort Airlines is expected to end its service to Athens, although the airline has not made any official notification.

Athens-Ben Epps Airport will keep its status as a commercial airport since large charter aircraft such as collegiate athletic charters operate unscheduled passenger flights into Athens. Passengers on these charters currently outnumber the scheduled service passengers and are expected to continue to increase as the current runway extension project is completed to allow for some flights of close to 150 passengers. The airport will remain fully functional with over 100 daily general aviation flights and periodic commercial charters in addition to these athletic team charters.

An airport that loses its EAS subsidy may reapply for the EAS program in the future if it can attract an airline that can operate within the guidelines of the EAS program. The Airport Authority continues to pursue the possibility of developing a program for the active recruitment of a new subsidized or non-subsidized airline. For more information, contact Athens-Ben Epps Airport Director Tim Beggerly at 706-613-3420 or visit www.athensclarkecounty.com/airport.

PUBLIC UTILITIES

Water Quality Report

ACC’s drinking water has again met or surpassed all state and federal standards for safe drinking water. The 2013 Water Quality Report, produced by the ACC Public Utilities Department, is now available online at athensclarkecounty.com/publicutilities. The annual report provides details of water quality tests and shows how the tap water supplied in Athens-Clarke County measures in comparison to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) health-based standards. Through this report, consumers can learn more about where their water comes from, water source protection, what is done to ensure drinking water quality, and other important information regarding drinking water and public health.

The 2013 Water Quality Report meets the U.S. EPA requirement for providing an annual Consumer Confidence Report to all water customers. In previous years, the report had been mailed directly to customers as part of the ACC Public Utilities Department’s WaterSource newsletter. Due to costs involved, the report is now being made available online and in select locations rather than through direct mail. For more information about the 2013 Water Quality Report, contact the ACC Public Utilities Department's Water Conservation Office at 706-613-3729.

SOLID WASTE

Upgrade in Leaf and Limb Service

During our recent budget work sessions I successfully convinced the Commission to allocate funds in the FY15 budget to return to having leaf and limb service every 6 weeks instead of 9 weeks. That budget was voted on in June and passed. Now that Solid Waste has the approval it t will take a month or two to purchase the equipment they need and hire some new staff.  If everything goes well you should have leaf and limb service every 6 weeks starting this fall.
