What leak detection system would you recommend installing with a new district cooling piping distribution system?

Hi,

We recommend to foam in insulated detection wires type 3dc and make the cable joints equally insulated from humidity.
This in order to avoid the effects from built in humidity in the pipe joints which can give a very low insulation resistance on DC systems when using naked copper wires for measurement and detection (Nordic system).
The cable needs to be foamed in already in the pipe manufacturing process. It is placed directly on the media pipe (with a protective tape in between cable and metal).
The cable is the connected to a stationary Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) type X3 with communication to central monitoring system XTOOL-SCADA/BMS..

Recently we have delivered systems to Perma Pipe Middle East (Lusial Project, Qatar) and Saudi Preinsulated Pipe Industries (Sabah Al Salah University Kuwait) but there are several other systems
installed. CHP producer Fortum are monitoring a DC pipe in central Stockholm using X3 with 3dc cable.

If only naked wires are available a TDR type X4 or equal can be used but less emphasis will normally be on insulation resistance between wires and steel pipe then in DH systems.
An as is reference TDR curve should instead be compared to TDR curves taken on a regular basis, typically once every 24 hours. A deviation from the reference will give the location of increased humidity in yards/meters from the starting point where the X4 is located.

You can also contact me on m...@wideco.se if you want to have more details

Best Regards,

Michael
