For even more height, remove the leg screws, and rotate the bracket 180 degrees and re-insert the leg screw (as seen in last two photos). This will bring the clearance to an impressive 63mm, when measured from the bottom of the violin to the center of the chinrest.
If you are not completely satisfied with your BonMusica Shoulder Rest, you may return it within 45 days of delivery for a refund. In order to get a product refund, the shoulder rest must be in the original packaging and condition, showing no signs of wear or abuse.
We kindly ask that you carefully consider your purchase before customizing and bending the shoulder pads. To maintain product integrity, we cannot accept the return of a BonMusica Shoulder Rest that has been bent and customized to a customer's preferred contour.

A padded base hook extension cozies to the contour of the player's shoulder, holding the instrument in the correct place and helping the player avoid the instrument sliding down towards the chest (this is always a problem with Kun, Wolf and other hook-less rests).
Don't let the word "hook" scare you. Think of it as a comfortable padded stability anchor. This unique and adjustable section, which is the defining feature on the BonMusica, can be manipulated in countless angles and shapes to fit the contour of the player's shoulder.
The BonMusica is adjustable in height, sideways slant, length over and placement on the shoulder and has a span to reach across various width violins or viola (within a size or two). The hook section can be placed in 3 different settings for players with sloped or small shoulders, or long or short upper bodies.
The extended bottom of the base is free from the anchoring "legs," so that can be independently adjusted as well and won't affect the height or angle because of the brilliant design of the extended base section. I replaced the shorter HKG35 foot section on my rest with the longer HKG50 to accommodate my very long neck and tall frame.
Players who use the BonMusica need not raise their shoulder or tense their neck to hold the instrument in place. When the BonMusica is properly adjusted, the player needs to simply lean his or her head into the chin rest and leave the shoulder loose and relaxed. The weight of the player's head will hold the instrument firmly in place with minimal tension to muscles or tendons.
Players who suffer from previous injuries or arthritis find enormous benefit in using the BonMusica as it allows the shoulder to remain relaxed yet keeps the violin held at the proper, higher angle, rather than drooping forward. Clamping down on the instrument with a tense jaw is eliminated, resulting in increased blood flow and less tension from shoulder to fingertip. Back and rib pain is a thing of the past because both sides of the body are aligned and balanced.
All players benefit from consistency in technique and hold, which will aid in intonation, proper bow placement and muscle memory. Discernible loss in volume or tone from this rest are negligible (read more info here) and the benefits outweigh any perceived reduction in vibrations.
I play violin professionally in three orchestras and have had up to 40 students at a time. I have used my BonMusica exclusively since 2002, the exact same shoulder rest all this time. To put that into perspective, my now adult son was in diapers when I bought my BonMusica!
You'd never know my rest is so old because of the quality materials and solid design that enables parts to be easily replaced instead of thrown away! To save our customers money and reduce waste, Fiddleheads sells replacement parts for our BonMusicas!
I replace the lower section of foam padding on the base of my own rest every 5 or so years when it starts to wear thin on the edge. I make sure to tighten the nuts and screws every few months or when I feel things loosening up due to vibrations and daily use.
Some players may lose a screw if they don't keep it tight, or to replace the hook section after 15 years of constant adjustments that cause eventual metal fatigue, but it's not a big deal to order those parts from us.
Long-term, it's so much more cost-effective to invest in a BonMusica. They are priced higher than cheaper, inferior options, but here you truly get what you pay for! For me, replacing a piece of foam or a missing screw has been preferable to buying an inferior shoulder rest every few years when they inevitably break or wear out.
Fiddleheads eliminated the superfluous paper BonMusica shoulder rest packaging from customer shipments. This not only reduces volume taking up space in delivery trucks and added packaging materials, but it also saves my clients money on shipping costs. All packaging not used is composted. Read more details on this process on my "Green" Eco Policy and Practices page.
What I particularly appreciate is the ability to mold the rest to my body's contours. Instead of feeling a localized point of pressure on my shoulder, I can now bend the surface of the rest so that it distributes the weight over a larger area. This not only adds to comfort but also ensures I can practice for extended periods without feeling discomfort.
Lastly, a notable shout-out to the adjustable chest area feature. For female players, this adjustability brings a whole new level of comfort. It's a subtle touch, but it makes a significant difference.
A light-hearted limitation: Please don't be like me, spending an entire hour adjusting the Bon Musica shoulder rest only to practice for a mere 5 minutes. Sometimes, achieving 80% of the perfect adjustment is more than sufficient. Enjoy the music and the experience!
In summary, if you're contemplating an upgrade or simply seeking more comfort and adaptability, the Bon Musica shoulder rest comes highly recommended. It's not just about the violin; it's about the whole experience, and this shoulder rest undoubtedly enhances it.
The way I have it at the moment, it doesn't quite fit perfectly into the case without bending it a little more, and other people have said it does for them, so I'm wondering if I'm doing something "wrong" or maybe it's just my shape.
Thank you very much for your advice and for your help with my order. I [feel] happiness and excitement about the new shoulder rest and the Strad Pad. I haven't had much of an opportunity to play and to get them set up 100% (returning to work from a vacation.....trying to catch up) but so far, it has been a good change.
I was searching the internet for a company that would supply foam padding for my Bon Musica shoulder rest, since that was the only thing worn out on this wonderful device. I could not find any place in Ontario the handled this so I took a chance and clicked on the Fiddleheads Violin Studio site, a company I had not heard of before.
So I ordered the foam pad and clicked on all the necessary things to finish the order but to my surprise there was no PayPal or MasterCard option to click on. Instead, the instruction was to pay by cheque, which I thought was unusual but in retrospect I thought that probably saved the Fiddleheads money in fees to those credit card companies. So kudos to them.
[REVIEW: Facebook, 5 stars] I recently purchased another shoulder rest from Rhiannon's shop and due to Covid 19 unrest the order got misplaced somehow. She went out of her way to make sure I got my order ASAP. Thank you for quick service.
I wanted to learn from the very beginning and not miss anything. I'm 44 but totally ok with the kiddie songs. I love to practice but improvements are slow. But I figure I'll just chip away at it and one day in maybe 10 years or so I'll be more confident. I really enjoy having something creative/musical to work on, since my 9-5 career is all left brain activity!
You had it and the price was fair, delivery was fast and the communication friendly.
I shall post in both Google and Facebook. 5 stars. And I shall continue to use Fiddleheads for getting high quality materials.
At first I was not a fan of the Bonmusica shoulder rest. I think I've got a rather short neck and the rest seemed too big to fit comfortably.
But I gave it a thorough tryout and decided I'll keep it.
I watched you tube videos which really helped to understand how it works for your neck and shoulder preferences.
I have it in the 'offset' position which works best for me as I have a narrow and smaller shoulder area. It truly is very ergonomic and so much better than the other 2 shoulder rests I have used all my life.
Shipping was fast, just 2 days. Thank you!
I bought this shoulder rest many years ago to help solve some drooping scroll problems. Back then I was a naive child who didn't understand how to adjust this shoulder rest so I ended up not liking it and went back to the Kun in the long haul and have solved my issues with other interventions and thought.
The main downside is that the hook can be annoying and restrictive for some people, but you can straighten the hook if you don't want to use it. After all, shoulder rests are a really individual thing, and what works for one person will not work for another.
