It seems like the recommended solution on GitHub is only valid in case of usage of Firejail. However, without Firejail installed the mentioned file /etc/thunderbird.profile does not even exist on my system.

Goto Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General > Config Editor, and search for entries containing the string ".icedove". Replace this string for each single entry by .thunderbird. Terminate your Thunderbird session, and for a last time remove the .icedove directory. Now you should be able to restart Thunderbird without problems.

In the account settings, for each mail account you have look at the server settings, under the heading "Message Storage" you will see a field named Local Directory:/home/user/.icedove/xxxxxxxx.default/ImapMail/imaps.isp.chmake the necessary change from ".icedove" to ".thunderbird" as modelled below/home/user/.thunderbird/mlnwvjfx.default/ImapMail/imaps.isp.ch(Adapt to your own settings)

Having used the Thunderbird deb package for some time, i now wish to move to the Snap.
Upon opening the Snap, my existing Thunderbird configurations and data are not detected.
I'd appreciate it if you could explain how to migrate my thunderbird preferences and data from the deb (v68.10.0) to snap (v78.7.1). on 20.04
I do not wish to lose the various settings I have accumulated whilst using the deb package.

Look at the Moving a Profile portion. The path is /.thunderbird/ for Linux. Hidden file.

This is because thunderbird was recently updated to 3.0 in ubuntu but the enigmail package conflicts with thunderbirds of version greater than 2.0. Enigmail v 1.0 is needed to support thunderbird 3.0 according to the enigmail website.

I assume this isn't actually "blocked by missing thunderbird-config" any more, as asac has a working enigmail for i386 in his PPA. (The amd64 build failed because dh_xul-ext apparently fails to support the common debhelper options for selecting packages to process, i.e. -a in this case).
