Hey all,

My issue is that I have some trouble figuring out how to save a project so the next time I need it I can simply click on the project file. I create a new project regurarly and then when I close the program or even when I back it up its nowhere to be found.

I understand that I should be able to find my projects on this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Distance 8\Sample Projects but when I go there all I can see are the text document containing my data. I have tried the  "Save this folder as default for Distance projects." that is sudgested in Chapter 4, but its still not working. Also when I try to open my projects from File> Open project I get this message:

Error Opening Project

Distance could not find the data file associated with the

project file

Files 8\Sample Projects\LV.dst

Please check that the data file is in the data folder.

What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance

Irini

Hello Irini.  Sounds like something is wrong with the install.  I'll contact you off the list and we can perhaps set up a video call so you can share your screen and we can see what's going on -- that'll likely be much quicker than emailing back and forth.  With best wishes, Len Thomas

Hello,

I have this same problem even after moving my projects to  C:\Program Files (x86)\Distance 8\Sample Projects.

I get the same error as Irini when trying to open a new project I just created, and I also get this message on any project I close (see screenshot attached).

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Program Distance and restarting the computer, but that has not solved the problem.

I appreciate any help.

You may have the same problem opening a project, but your screenshot also describes problems in saving a project. Let's try to deal with the saving problem in the first instance.

Can you describe the following:
  • what version of Distance for Windows are you using? The most recent version is 8.0.
  • what version of the Windows operating system are you using? Windows 10, 11?
  • the problem occurs for the file directory you describe, what happens if you create a fresh project and save it to a simple directory, say "C:\mydirectory". Can you perform such a save and can you open the project again if you successfully save it?

Answers to those questions will help identify the problem.

Update:

Running Windows 11 with Distance 8. Creating a new folder directly on my C:\ drive fixed the problem. I can now save and reopen newly created projects. I also moved all my old projects to this folder, which can now be altered, and I don't get an error message after I close the project.

 Thank you, Eric!
