how to reflect the difference of groups quantity in distance sampling

 if objects occured as single animal and group animals at the same time in certain transecr line, single animal  was treated as one group and  group animals  as groups number, but this did not  distinguish   the difference of groups quantity, such as ten number and thirty number may be all are two groups. how to deal with it,thanks a lot.

You have one row for each group detected.  That row will include a field for group size.  That will be 1 for a single animal, 10 for a group of size 10, and so on.  A line with multiple detections will have multiple rows in the data.

Look at the example projects supplied with the Distance for Windows software.  Examples are found in the folder "Sample Projects".  The project named "Line Transect Example" demonstrates how to organise data for this situation.

(1)Do you mean  "group size"=" Cluster size"?(2) I totally understand . one row  represents  each group detected and each group size was the number of animals detected，am I right？thank you again （3）How to update distance sampling software? manully or automatically? do I need to uninstall it again?

You are correct:

• "group size" and "cluster size" are equivalent
• each row in your data represents a detection and if the detection is made of a group, the number of individuals in the group is also recorded in that row
• Distance for Windows software does not have an automatic update feature; if you wish to update, (the current version is Distance 7.4) download from this web address after answering a few questions:
