Hey everyone,

I have a dataset with 14 transects and but instead of perpendicular distance from the transect I am using 3 distance bands (0-25, 25-50, 50-100) for bird counts. The I am is to calculate densities.

On the windows package I couldnt find an option for bands and on the R examples I could find one using bands. Do you think its possible?

Thanks a lot :)

Hello,

Welcome to the list.

I'm glad you have found how to analyse binned data in R, binned data can also be analysed in Distance for Windows.

You will need to first enter / import your data into Distance for Windows as exact distances and then you can convert them to intervals using the Intervals tab of the Data Filter. The easiest way to convert your intervals to a single distance is to use the mid point, so for your data you could use 12.5 for the 0-25 interval, 37.5 for the 25-50 interval and 75 for the 50-100 interval. Note that you must now analyse these as interval data you cannot just analyse them as exact distances. Also make sure that you have 1 row in your data for each observation, so if 5 objects were observed on the first transect in the first interval then you would have 5 rows with a distance of 12.5 each in your dataset.

When you have entered / imported your data you should then create a new analysis and open the associated Data Filter. In the Intervals tab of the Data Filter click on “Transform distance data into intervals for analysis” and enter your intervals.

I hope this is helpful, you can also find further information in the help inside Distance for Windows.

Best wishes,
Laura
