Well, the older models had a poor design with the on/off switch on the
cap to the batteries. That part broke on the older model I have but it
was very easy to fix. I also have a newer model that doesn't have that
problem because there is no on/off switch (it is on when in use and off
otherwise). As for battery problems, I have only had to replace the
batteries about once a year. I also have a Nikon 600 which is about
$250. It is good for closer distances (<100 m) because it records
distance in 0.5 m increments up to 99.5 m. However, it is difficult to
measure distances beyond 150-200 m with it.

Hi Matthew-
Sounds like you've have a good experience with the Scouts? We bought 4
the first year they came out (a mistake, granted) and were badly
disappointed -2 broke immediately, one was so inaccurate right out of
the box we sent it back for alignment and never saw it again. The 4th
worked well enough, but the batteries were soon expended and had to come
by in rural Utah counties. I'd be glad to hear they now work -the size
is still very attractive to the average gear-laden field tech...

Bushnel Yardage Pro Scout; minimum distance is 10 m, maximum distance
is about 550 m. It has a scan mode and >150 mode that can be helpful
for far targets in moderate brush cover. I thing the unit is about
$140.

Hello All,
Can anyone recommend some decent range finders ($100-200)? We are
working in forested habitat and typically record >10 individuals at each
point count station. Thanks so much, Kimberly Ferree
