Hello Alan
In our software you have two choices for specifying the truncation distance: either an absolute distance (say 200 meters), or relative to the distribution of detection distances you observed. In the latter case, imagine your observed distances ordered from
smallest to largest. Selecting a percentage equates to eliminating the X% most distant detections, where X is the value you specify to the software.
In our distance sampling literature, we cannot specify an absolute truncation distance as guidance because of the variety of species and types of surveys for which distance sampling is used. It is easier to suggest guidance that is generally applicable, in
which case we suggest truncation of the 5% most distant detections for line transects and more severe, 10% truncation for point transect surveys.
I hope that answers your question, if you have further questions, please ask.
