Known as the Chainsaw demo, it all kicks off near the beginning of Resident Evil 4, when Leon enters the game's mysterious village. And yes, there will be a chainsaw involved. I don't want to say I called it, but I totally called it.

This demo begins with a quick recap of the events of Resident Evil 2, which led to Leon being enlisted into a secret goverment program and undergoing rigrous training before his special duty to guard the President's daughter, who has now gone missing.

Only a few more weeks remain before the release of the Resident Evil 4 remake, and fortunately, you can kill some time by diving into the official demo that Capcom released this week. Not just a slice of gameplay to help prepare you for the survival-horror that lies ahead of Leon S. Kennedy, this Resident Evil 4 demo also has its very own exclusive difficulty mode.

And these screenshots show? To me they look good. You didn't answer what "shake things up" you were expecting [edit] missed the bit about shake up being related to the story, but I also disagree there. Some things will probably change and I'm not against that, but "shake things up" level of story changes I don't think it needs[/edit]. There were definitely bits where the textures didn't look great (the ground in the scene with the axe falling at the end of the demo looked pretty bad for me when I played it), but I wasn't contesting that. I was contesting your point that it looks like the original version (or HD remake that you probably meant) with some RT added. Those screenshots of you do not look bad. For reference, this is what the original looked like compared to this year's remake:

Yeah I took it rather literally. I just feel we have a lot of (hyperbolic example) "what's up with these PS2 level graphics" nowadays. It's not the perfect engine or visuals by any means, but I think people exaggerate how bad certain games look. What game would you say demonstrates the standards we should expect for a 2023 remake?

Blowing you away visually is hard for RE I'd say, because they rely on a more subtle atmosphere and have had multiple installments at the current level of graphical fidelity now. The RE2 and 3 remakes did visually impress me, because RE basically had never looked that good, but now that we're used to it I wasn't visually impressed by Village in the same way, for example. Same with 4 now. On the purely visual aspect the demo looked pretty much the same as Village to me, but combined with the atmosphere of the updated assets, lighting and simple nostalgia it looks like a banger to me.

Starting off you will get dropped into the beginning of the game and be able to play through to the end of Chapter 1. From loading into the demo it feels and looks like a resident evil game worthy of the previous two games which were remade, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Coming from someone who has not experienced the full horror of Resident Evil 4 this latest remake felt something special. The atmosphere and movement of the game keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what monster will leap out at you next and the low ammo makes you wonder if you will last the next or current encounter. Although the demo only encompasses Chapter 1 you can feel the love and time that the team at Capcom has put into every moment you are playing and the fact that you are pitted against insurmountable odds and expected to survive is a daunting task.

Think the graphics were a little shoddy in places maybe too aggressive dynamic resolution? Pld in performance mode.
Anyway demo was pretty cool, Dr. Salvador got me the 1st time of course but I completed the demo after my 2nd try...there are some nasty surprises in place. Just check out the bell tower for instance I'm eager for more and tbh already have this pre-ordered physical for some time now.
I don't think this is a lazy remake in any way, also like how they kept the original inventory but made it really snappy now.
The melee and slight stealth system is also a welcome addition. Really looking forward to the full version.

I am a bit disappointed with the graphics in all honesty / they appear quite blurry, even after turning blur off, aberration off and tried in resolution and frame rate. Genuinely a little disappointed with the general blur - defo not as razor sharp as GOW or even horizon. Took back a little by it but nice to see a remake and hope for resident evil 1 and Veronica next.

@Yyy I thought long and hard about how excited I was to play the demo and then did exactly that and I was disappointed in the slightest, this is going to be an excellent remake that is in no way remotely lazy

It has been 18 years since the release of Capcom's original Resident Evil 4 title for the Nintendo GameCube, and now the release of its remake is under two weeks away. As one of 2023's most anticipated games and what many fans consider to be the best game in the franchise, the Resident Evil 4 remake is sure to captivate new and returning players alike. To further ensure its success and give players a brief taste of the upcoming survival horror experience, Capcom has released the Chainsaw Demo which has undoubtedly contributed to its position in Steam's top sellers ahead of its release, and gamers are already discovering secrets within the demo.

While the demo is quite short, it provides enough content for players to experience what the final game will offer in terms of graphics and gameplay. The developers even included a secret weapon in the demo that is much more powerful than the handgun players begin with: the TMP submachine gun. Obtaining the weapon is unfortunately not as straightforward as simply finding it, as it requires the player to empty their inventory before entering a certain location. Once found, however, the TMP makes defeating the chainsaw boss at the end of the demo a walk in the park. Here is each step to finding the weapon.

Resident Evil 4's remake launches in just a couple of weeks on March 24th. If even that is too long to wait, you're now in luck: Capcom just released a demo. It features an early section of the game and no time limit.

While the recently released demo for the remake of Resident Evil 4 mostly serves to let players get a small taste of the full game, it also contains some deviously hidden secrets, including the demo's best weapon. Continuing a Resident Evil trend of remaking old classics in a modern style, Resident Evil 4's presents perhaps the remake series' biggest challenge yet, with the original RE4 being an almost universally beloved classic.

As the full game draws closer to release, it's become clear that Resident Evil 4 is changing the original's gameplay in significant ways, with most changes being on full display in Resident Evil 4's Chainsaw Demo. Notably, the remake makes significant changes to Leon's capabilities in combat - he can move while aiming, quickly swap weapons without visiting the inventory, and even parry enemy attacks with his knife (at the cost of limited durability). But while streamlined combat will help most players get through the demo's short duration, there's also a particularly hard-to-find secret that gives access to its most powerful weapon.

The Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo allows players to access the pistol, shotgun, and grenades that would normally be available in the game's opening section, but also contains a third obtainable gun - a fully upgraded TMP. The weapon far outstrips the demo's pistol and shotgun, making taking down Ganados a breeze - and it can be invaluable for taking on the RE4 remake demo's secret hard mode, as obtaining it once then carries it over to player's inventory on any subsequent runs. However, actually getting to the gun takes making some seemingly counterproductive decisions, making it a particularly difficult secret to find naturally.

As Resident Evil 4 Remake draws closer to release, the particulars of its demo are still being teased out by the community. Discoveries like the secret TMP, or the code that allows players to access the otherwise random hard mode make for a demo that's surprisingly more than just a short glimpse at the full game - and will do plenty to tide over eager fans until the Resident Evil 4 remake's full release on March 24, 2023.

Something that's clear from even this brief demo is that Capcom is smartly changing understated elements of Resident Evil 4 to keep returning players guessing. When the village battle started to overwhelm I immediately made a run for the small watchtower, where a long ladder climb used to reward you with shotgun ammunition and a brief respite from the carnage; only now the floor collapsed within seconds, bringing me face-to-face with six Ganados and a revving chainsaw. The little house off from the main bonfire which used to contain ammo and enough space to reload and heal-up, now packed with enemies and a backroom window which allows even more villagers to flood through and surround you. Head to the North Gate to try and get some easy shots on Dr. Salvador and the two Los Ganados flanking him? Well now he bursts forth from behind the gate in an impressive little cutscene, chainsaw held high, forcing me into a panicked parry with my hastily degrading combat knife.
