I just saw: http://techcrunch.com/2010/03/08/stickybits-barcodes-message-boards/

I can't help wonder how easy it would be to rebuild on open tech. QRCode stickers would allow any object to be mapped to any real URIs, so the question is what to place at that URI.

Seems like the object has it's own wall-like activity-stream feed with also includes location (in the event the object moves). And users have a dashboard to manage friends (yawn), to manage the objects they 'own', to find all the objects owned by friends, and to record all the other objects they have encountered.

Think an activity stream with salmon would be enough to cover this use case? Is there anything else needed to do this in a distributed way?

I definitely think ActivityStreams for services, sensors, bots, and other digiterati all makes sense.

The last thing that's missing here is some mechanism to perform ad-hoc discovery, and fortunately, there are some efforts there to meet that need.
