In chatting with Paul Irish, realized a jQuery (or general js framework agnostic) plugin might be just the ticket for getting some OpenID adoption/traction.

The key here would be something that becomes easy to implement and familiar to users.

Thickbox (now retired) gained wide adoption because it was easy to implement, solved a recurring need for UI developers, and was consistent in it's look, even though other generic brands also came along.

Probably will utilize Aza's (stolen, ha) CSS sniffing technique (see http://www.azarask.in/blog/post/socialhistoryjs/ ) , to help *somewhat* reduce the "nascar" problem to more basics.

I'll need some implementation/engineering help, as I'm more a UI guy.

Who's in?

Certainly interested in this...! Might be able to deploy it through the WordPress OpenID plugin too... we could start by identifying the various OpenID user interfaces that we need to accommodate:

* sign in
* sign up
* commenting
* more?

Yeah, I think WordPress is an ideal platform.  That said, I think a "plugin" should be as platform agnostic as possible, so WordPress could be the implementation/testing grounds, but I'm also interested in seeing how far we can get w/ just a stand-alone plugin, per se.  So both?

Naturally, no plugin stands alone, but creating agnostic hooks, or what not, would do.

Btw, while I think Gigya and RPX are *awesome,* my other motivation here is opening up something seemingly mysterious to the eyes of more people -- hence open source.

I started testing Aza's sniffing technique last night on logged-in landing pages for major OpenID providers w/ some interesting results -- got everyone working except Yahoo!  Some other ideas on discovery were mentioned here before (I'll have to go dig through the archives), but I definitely thing, from the front-end, this technique can be a first-level test.  I'm starting to think more than one test could(/should?) be built in.

Another aspect on this. Andy Peatling, of BuddyPress fame, has the social stack worked a little later into his roadmap, which, arguably, is even a better platform than WordPress.  With the merging of WordPress and WordPress MU in iteration 3 (is that right?), BuddyPress is headed toward one of the officially sanctioned/supported plugins for WordPress (I wouldn't be surprised to see it become a branch of the main trunk at some point, tho' that's @ Automattic's discretion probably).

So I'm also thinking with BuddyPress in mind, especially as it matures into a more robust system, ever-ready to lead among (open source) identity platforms...

I've also chatted w/ Peatling about this, and he's interested in putting things into core, given that they have the right kick, ha.

I've started using an unofficial IRC channel for diso-related purposes.  It does seem like things have slowed down a bit on the diso front, so maybe there just needs to be some centers of action.  I'm nominating ##diso as a hive.  If anyone wants to do something more official (like register an official channel), I'm all for it.

Just for context, Diso is intended as a general "bucket" for discussing techniques and technologies for achieving the infrastructure of a distributed social network (or disos — distributed social networks). It can fade in and out as the centerpiece for a broader effort to move the state of the social web forward — and as such, doesn't need to be a central brand, per se. When you say things have slowed down within Diso, you just have to look to its constellated technologies to see that it's still alive and well, even if the core is "hibernating". ;)

That said, I'm happy to see #diso get picked up — on Twitter, StatusNet or IRC (freenode). I don't remember if I ever officially registered the channel, and since IRC doesn't really have a concrete "interface", I don't know where I'd go check either — so feel free to set it up!

As for the collaboration with BuddyPress, I'd love to see more action there, and if you're willing to act as a bridge, that'd be great to move things forward.

#diso has been registered for awhile, and some people hang out in there.
It's never been announced or anything, though.

Good points.  A couple of us over @ buddypress just set up a dev svn enviro to start doing some testing.  I'll broadcast more on it when it's in a little better shape.
