Where does history say you should be in the Lower 48 states for the best chance of seeing a white Christmas? Most of Idaho, Minnesota, Maine, Upstate New York, the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and, of course, the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada Mountains all have a high probability of seeing a white Christmas. And, Crested Butte, Colorado, is just one of about a handful of weather stations boasting a nearly 100 percent historical probability of seeing a white Christmas.
Alaska. Minnesota. Maine. Upstate New York. The Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Practically anywhere in Idaho. And of course, the Rockies or the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These are the parts of the United States where weather history suggests you want to be if you're looking for the best chance of a white Christmas.

Am I dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones Nashville used to know? Sure, why not. Just as long as it's safe to drive in for all. If there's one thing all Nashvillians know (born and raised here or transplants), it's that wintry weather and local traffic DO NOT mix. And apparently never have, according to this 1962 Nashville Banner cartoon...
For this blog post though, and to keep things as brief as this writer is able to, I'm just going to highlight only a few of those eleven occurrences when Nashville got to experience a white Christmas, plus one several years after these 1912 listings. Starting with Christmas Day in 1878...
As a native Nashvillian, I can say that I remember maybe one white Christmas in Nashville in the last few decades. So despite the fact that this year's storm is dangerous and unfortunate for travelers, I can personally say that it provides a nice little dose of magic ;)
Stay cool inside and outside this holiday season! We have selected three food friendly white wines for a treat everyone will love at the holiday feasts. Or send to someone who loves a chilled glass of white wine no matter the weather.
So, the next time you feel the urge to say that it will not seem like Christmas without snow, think of ways that you can bring light to the world. Think of ways that you can spread the joy that God wants all of us to feel and think of ways that you can help your fellowman. If you do that, then you most assuredly will have a white Christmas. Spreading the light that God shines on all of us, seeing the world with positive eyes, and helping our fellowman will bring each of us peace and PEACE MATTERS.
Well, how much fun is that! I was so intrigued by the musical notes that I forgot to comment on the gorgeous white decor of the house featured. It is just lovely and I would feel right at home should I ever be so lucky to be invited ;). Sometimes a clean white wall is just the perfect wall color. And all of the amber touches make the rooms warm and inviting. Thanks for sharing.
I, like you, Susan, love being surrounded by color, but in my fantasies (I have two dogs and a cat) I dream of an all white decor (beamed ceilings, dark wood floors, cream colored sofas, etc.). So romantic and peaceful, but it would be such a headache to keep up. Thanks, though, for the beautiful pics.
Less than an inch fell in Buffalo on Christmas Day in 2018, but there was already some leftover snow on the ground. It was enough to bring the snow depth up to an inch, so technically, it was a white Christmas.
Good morning friends. How was your weekend? I have to say I'm feeling a little dusty after a big birthday weekend which involved cross country skiing (yes, I even managed to find a little snow in Skåne!), a barbecue (who knew we'd still be grilling at this time of year?), and even chopping down our Christmas tree (pics to follow). And it's in the spirit of the latter that I thought we could kick off the week. I featured Angela Giovanna's Munich home back in the summer and was curious to see how it looks with some beautiful festive touches. After all, who doesn't love a white Christmas? As you can imagine Angela, husband Tommi, baby boy Raffael and their little dog Juno's home is as cosy and pretty as can be!
I love a hanging candle wreath (I'm sure they have a better name, but as mentioned my mind is only half functioning this morning!). The Duo candles are from Ferm Living and the wall has been painted with Icelandic Kalklitir, giving it a beautiful patina.
I have to say candles are having a real moment this year - have you noticed this too? This one in the window is from Berlin based Førm Projekt.

How fun! The white shows up beautifully against the red walls in your living room. My favorite ornanaments are the special ones with a story. I tell my husband the story of each ornament as i hang it on the tree every year:). Im sure he's already sick of hearing them, but I love it.
Great white tree! Totally dig the monograms and chain garland. ? I have a couple white trees because last year after saving about 100 pictures of white trees online I realized I prolly should get one. Found them on clearance after the holidays and had a ball decorating them this year.
I like having a centerpiece on a table that you can see and easily talk over so when I found these snowy white LED Christmas trees I snagged them! The mercury glass Christmas trees were a Christmas Tree Shops andThat! find from last year and one of my most favorite Christmas items I own- they are just so versatile. For the centerpiece, I just rounded up some glass hurricanes I had and placed the snowy white and mercury glass trees in each one.
Moving on the crown jewel of the room- the garland and wreath! I was hard to choose from the selection but I ultimately decided on this pretty silver and white option. To get a really full look I used two garland strands across the mirror and then used a wreath hanger to add the wreath.
Historically, a "white" Christmas (an inch or more of snow on the ground Christmas morning) occurs 53% of the time at Two Rivers, 60-70% of the time at Kewaunee and Manitowoc, 70-75% of the time in Green Bay and the Fox Valley, 85-90% in Wausau, and over 90% of the time in Rhinelander and far north-central Wisconsin. Lac Vieux Desert in Vilas County has nearly a 100% chance of a "white" Christmas.
Snow cover is lacking across much of central and east-central Wisconsin as of the 23rd, and chances are low for an inch of snow to fall before Christmas Day. There are much better chances of a "white" Christmas across northern Wisconsin due to recent snowfall and some additional snow on Christmas Eve.

Extended forecasting tools are only useful if you know what to look for. In this article, we are going to look at the early Christmas snow trends and what is the probability of snow during the holidays.
But before we look at the actual forecast trends, we need to know just how common it is to have a white Christmas across the United States and Europe.
Over the United States, the story is quite the same. The biggest probability for a white Christmas is over the Rocky Mountains, the Midwest, and the northeastern United States. Historically, the Northeastern United States has a 50-60% chance of snow on Christmas Day, with higher probabilities in the northern areas like upstate New York and Maine. Over the Midwest, we have states like Minnesota and Wisconsin with a 60-70% historical probability of having a white Christmas.
Given that the time period for the low-pressure system to cross into the eastern United States is similar to the GEFS forecast, this gives good confidence in this scenario and a higher white Christmas chance across parts of the eastern and especially the northeastern United States.
Whether you're listening to the radio in Caribou, Maine, or Phoenix, Arizona, during the month of December, chances are you'll hear Bing Crosby singing the lyrics, "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas." But why does Bing sound so sad? And what does everyone mean when they're hoping this year will be a white Christmas?
A white Christmas, of course, refers to snowy weather on Christmas Day. If you wake up Christmas morning and look out the window to see a blanket of bright, white snow, then you've officially experienced your very own "white Christmas." Hoping for one has become a tradition, just like putting up the Christmas tree and hanging stockings, and it isn't exclusive to the United States. It's such a big deal in London and Dublin, for instance, that people actually track odds and gamble every year on whether or not there will be any snowfall on Dec. 25.
