My Disklavier MK IV control unit recently failed. The audio portion of the box failed and I could no longer get audio output to my speakers when playing PianoSoft Plus type files that had been loaded onto my Disklavier Hard Drive. After talking to my local Yamaha technician I decided to upgrade to the Enspire version. It turned out to be a fairly simple procedure and the piano is now just like a brand new Enspire version piano.

I had a fair number of music MIDI files loaded on the hard drive. The guy that converted my piano to the new Enspire version told me that I can download all of my old files off of the Mark IV hard drive and then load them onto one or more flash drives. and then play my old recorded PianoSoft Plus music, which will now be available on the flash drive, on my new Enspire piano.

Unfortunately I have not been able to make that happen. I have plugged the flash drive into the new Enspire control box port labeled “USB”. When I try and play a song from the flash drive, I get the audio portion of the file on one of the speakers. On the other speaker (or channel), I get the MIDI “squeal”. The keyboard will not play. I don’t know if there is something else I need to do. From my reading of previous threads about this issue there doesn’t appear to be an easy fix to this problem.

Do any of you “experts" out there have any thoughts or possibly a solution this this problem. This is somewhat disturbing because I would have just paid to have my old Mark IV box fixed and kept my piano as the original Mark IV version if I had known that I would lose access to all of my old PianoPlus Audio files.

Come on Guys and Gals,

The issue is whether MIDI files, particularly PianoSoft Plus type files, can be recovered after a DKC900 upgrade.

There must be someone in the group who has experience with this issue and can help Ned. Support for members who have Disklavier problems is the very reason for the existence of this group. If members with knowledge can't be bothered taking a little time to help other members, I wonder why we bother with the continuance of the group.

Kind regards

This isn't a recovery issue.  The files have been recovered.  The question is if there is any way to route the "midi-as-audio" channel through the decoder.  I'm holding onto my MarkIV as long as possible (since I consider everything else a downgrade - including issues like this one) so I can't, unfortunately, offer any information.

Also, this week in particular probably finds many members away from their email (I hope!)

On mark iv there is an option in the audio setup (if I'm not mistaken, away from the unit at the moment) where it says audio+midi (apart from just audio by default for me) in the audio channel. If this can help.. All the best!

In the sport of helping the ignorant I need to recreate the midi playback via a pc

I was in a choir with a technically talented director. He helped me load midi files on to my pc and played them through my DXC 500R XG

Can anybody direct me to the resources that can help me?

Best Regards,

Howard

I believe that current Yamaha Musicsoft Enspire media for actual artists include both a midi file and a Wav file with the same name in the same folder.

The Enspire unit syncs the files when playing.

FYI = Keith Collins is a great “go to” guy for having survived the Mark III/IV-to-Enspire migration challenge of getting your priceless curated MID and Yamaha proprietary songs/titles/collections from III/IV to Enspire … and he is an active member of all these DK support groups

Also FYI = thanks to members of this group (you know who you are) I learned last week how to accomplish the opposite … that is, take supposed Enspire-only PianoSoft AUDIO songs (WAV/MP3) and convert them to play on my DKC-850/MARK III/DC6 Pro

p.s. I’ve received tons of excellent support/advice from individual members of this group … priceless

I thought this thread looked familiar, then realized my reply below on 12/26 went privately to Ned instead of to the group address. Sorry about that, Geoff...

Enspire dropped support for the PianoSoft Plus Audio format, I suppose because the control unit no longer includes a CD player, so those WAV files won't play as they are.  It's analogous to how Yamaha also dropped support for ESEQ files due to the control unit no longer including a floppy drive.

For WAV files of solo piano material in PianoSoft Plus Audio format, your best bet is to find the original MIDI files and put those on the USB drive instead of the encoded versions (due to the encoding process being slightly lossy and the WAV files being needlessly HUGE).

For WAV files of PianoSoft Plus Audio material with accompaniment, the material needs to be converted from PianoSoft Plus Audio format (stereo WAV file with piano control signal one channel and monaural accompaniment on the other) to the PianoSoft Audio format supported by Enspire (MIDI files plus adjacent stereo WAV or MP3 files of the accompaniment).

Yamaha has a project underway to convert their PianoSoft Plus Audio material to PianoSoft Audio format.  I've heard some Disklavier owners have been able to request and obtain the equivalent PianoSoft Audio versions of their PianoSoft Plus Audio CD through Yamaha Corp. of America, but I don't think there's an official process in place for that yet.

Technically, it would be possible to convert the WAV files you have directly to MID/WAV or MID/MP3 pairs, but the software to do that is not publicly available, and the results would be better if Yamaha is able to go back to the stereo accompaniment audio instead of using the mono accompaniment audio from the released CDs.

From responses received, it seems that some assistance has been given by helpful members on various topics in private messages.  In the interests of sharing knowledge widely, I suggest that all responses (unless unavoidably containing private information which the responder wishes to keep private) should be shared with the group.

Thanks to all
