Hi all,
I have 12 year old DC3 Mark IV and am astonished to find that the plastic key tops are coming adrift.  I hope Yamaha used a better adhesive in the piano action.

Can anyone suggest what adhesive I should use to reattach them, and any other tips.  Will a common PVA wood glue be OK?

Kind regards

Geoff

i think that PVA or PVCE glue would be safe. probably best to scrape off the old glue since it might be compatible with what you use next.

i would not use epoxy or other permanent glues unless you are certain that you will get the position exactly right.

PVA is probably the most easily reversed but also the weakest

Hi Geoff
I hope this finds you well.
If you don’t get an answer on this I can give you the phone details of the Yamaha Repair Representative in Sydney.

His details are:
Neville 0417448558

The keys on my Clavinova (about 12 years old) were doing some odd things and he fixed it for me a couple of weeks ago. It turns out the felt under the keys which was attached with double sided glue had had its day. $230 and he did a great job and that was in my home in Newcastle.
Give him a call and he would probably advise you over the phone what to use and he could be a handy person to keep in your contacts.
Have a great day

Might be able to contact Yamaha and get this done under warranty. Worth a shot. I saw a customer recently who had a 10 year old Yamaha and they paid for his key tops to be replaced because of the same problem.

Thanks Julie

I know Neville.  He spent about 2 years wrestling with a failure of my Disklavier electronics.  He eventually sorted it out and Yamaha paid.  However, I believe he is the only Yamaha tech in Sydney and he has too much work.  I will call him for advice on the keys.

Kind regards

I spoke with Neville Wearne (mentioned by Julie in an earlier reply) and he said that there is no way Yamaha Australia will give warranty after the warranty period.

Hi Geoff,
What is the serial number of your piano? Yamaha Australia certainly will replace the keytops on Yamahas within a certain serial number range, under a special program. In fact, if you are prepared to wait several months, they will replace the whole set of keys! I have done this with a U1, a C5 and a C7 so far for different customers (I am a piano technician as well as a DC3X owner). If you do wish to reglue them in the interim, then use PVCe glue.

Hi Fred

Thanks for that advice.  I can but ask them and hope.  I will let you know the outcome.

Kind regards

Hi Geoff,
It has to be done through a YASA (Yamaha Authorised Service Technician). That’s why I asked you for your serial number…. As it’s a serial number range that they offer the replacement 😊

Dr. Cole,

Have any of your clients had a DU1A? My keys are fine but noticing "U1" makes me wonder if I might have a problem in store.

Blessings,

Wanda

I have now had contact with Yamaha Australia (Julian 0407 542 248).  Yamaha has an extended warranty programme for a limited series of pianos with this known glue issue.  Yamaha has agreed to replace all the keys with new keys.  That will take 4-6 months as they have to be manufactured specifically.  The alternative was that a technician would come and take my keys away and remove all keytops and re-glue them.  Dr Fred Cole - thank you for alerting me to this.  I will call Neville Wearne and apprise him of the situation.

Wanda, if none of your keytops are lifting (at the front) I suggest that you don't have a problem.  I have removed 25 lifting keytops from my piano.  I will now re-glue them and await the replacement keys.  I have taken photos for Yamaha.
Kind regards

Geoff
