Hey all,

I have a Yamaha C1 Disklavier with a DKC500R XG unit on it. The record and playback work well, but lately the MIDI In (playback from external MIDI source) has been giving me trouble. It will miss MIDI messages or fail to playback a significant percentage of the messages. It seems to be heat related. If I unplug it for a few hours and plug it in again, it will work for a few minutes and slowly degrade. Opening it up, nothing looks particularly unhappy component wise, so that makes repairing it difficult. I have a couple of questions:

1. have any of you experienced this symptom and can it be repaired?
2. The recommended replacement for these units on Mark II pianos was the DKC 850 but now I see we can't get them anymore. Does anybody have one they would sell?
3. I've read that the DKC 900 is the replacement for the DKC 850 but that it does not work on Mark II. Is that still the case? I read that Yamaha had plans to increase the reverse compatibility of DKC 900 to include Mark II. However, looking at Yamaha's chart, I don't see anything but Mark IV and E3, so I imagine that I'm out of luck.

Thanks for your help here!

Hi Paul,

I have no repair suggestion, but a trick I used for a similar problem on an audio preamp was to get a USB powered computer fan and place it where it pulled the warm air out of the case.

They are cheap and easy to mount, and come in many sizes. It may keep the temperature of your unit cool enough so that it won't exhibit the symptoms.

Good luck.
