DKC-800 Intermittently Reboots

Original owner of a 2011 Yamaha DC2E3 here. Any ideas on what’s going on and what I can do to resolve this ongoing issue of the DKC-800 intermittently rebooting itself?  Sometimes it would play for an hour uninterrupted while at other times it would reboot again within a minute of rebooting.  It will do it regardless of whether I’m playing from the system’s memory, or USB or CD.

You might try disconnecting all of the cables except power and see whether the rebooting still occurs.  If it does, it means the cause is internal to the unit (not due to external factors) and might involve faulty flash memory or DRAM, bad calibration data, etc.  I’d also try running a full calibration and see whether that makes a difference. If it’s possible to reflash the firmware, that could be worth trying too.

Btw, would upgrading to Enspire controller a simple plug-and-play option for the E3 (and quite possibly also eliminate the rebooting issue)?

Alright, tried to do all that and the unit still intermittently reboots in the middle of playing pianosoft music.  Researched the internet and it seems to point to the power supply.  Apparently, there's this shop in Buena Park, California near Yamaha's Headquarters that does this and so I called them, the business name is TAP Electronics. The guy I spoke with, Sal, sounded very familiar with the problem and confirmed that indeed those symptoms indicate the power supply is causing all the trouble. The "ICM" needs to be replaced.  Flat fee of $850.  I searched the internet and TAP Electronics appears to be the go to place when it comes to fixing Disklavier power supply.  In 2017, these guys used to charge a $200 flat fee.  Last Sept. 2024, they charged $750.  My question is do we have an alternate shop who might probably charge less?  It's $850 now.  Hurry with your thoughts please, it could be $900 next week lol :)  Without an alternative, I'll need to take this power supply to TAP as I just want it fixed.  I'm thinking of upgrading soon to a DKC-900 unit and want to make sure everything is in order before the upgrade.

I might be wrong, but my recollection from reading various Disklavier forums for years is that TAP arranged to have exclusive access to a Yamaha-specific integrated circuit used in the power supplies, giving them the ability to charge whatever the market will bear.

Until someone comes up with an alternative for that part or designs a compatible aftermarket power supply, TAP seems to be the only option.

I had a similar problem (on my DKC-850), but it turned out that the on/off switch and circuit was bad (according to my piano tuner/tech).  I ended up ordering this part from Yamaha and installed it myself.  Not sure if you have the same issue and I only ordered the part because my tech was pretty confident it was the issue.   The part I ordered for my issue was:

The price of the part was expensive, so likely have gone up in the last few years.  Good luck!

I found online another DKC-800 user that has the same issue as mine-  intermittent reboots - and the solution was to replace the USB board.  It makes me think now that it is indeed the actual culprit.  TAP Electronics was insisting (suspiciously to me) that they'd clean my DKC-800 unit for $50 while they worked on the power supply (for $850).  

1.  To SJ Hart who had done this before:  How hard was it to remove and replace the USB Board Part No. WN757300? Did you order the part from Yamaha?

2.  To everyone: Would you recommend for me to just buy the DKC-900 since I'm looking to upgrade anyway?  At least, if the intermittent reboot issue is fixed, then I'd be able to save parts money and repair time for the DKC-800.  If the issue persists, then I know it is really the power supply and I 'll take care of it at that point.  What do you guys think?

It has been awhile since I replaced the part, but I don’t recall it being that difficult. I ordered the part directly from Yamaha.  My piano tech told me he has done several of these and that it was a common repair.  He would have done it for me, but would have charged accordingly.  My unit would regularly go in and out of standby…
