For natural persons, the fiscal code is made of 16 alphanumeric characters; for legal persons (e.g. corporations) it comprises 11 numeric-only characters. While it is possible to calculate one's tax code, the only official tax code is the one provided by the tax office, which avoids cases of identical tax codes (which is a frequent case for people not born in Italy, as in this case the 4-characters town code in the codice fiscale is replaced by "Z" followed by a 3-digit country code) as well as cases where a code is incorrect, but still valid (because provided by the tax office).

The codice fiscale is the Italian tax code which you will require in getting into any legal relationship whatsoever, including your housing contract with the EUI. You can get a codice fiscale at the Italian Embassy in your country before you come, or you can get it from the Agenzia delle Entrate office in Florence when you arrive. We recommend you to get it before you come to Italy as it would be one less urgent thing to do here once you come. You can do your check-in without the codice fiscale, however you will need to go to the city centre right away to get it after check-in as we cannot proceed with preparing your contract without it, which may create legal complications.

Please note that exchange students are not given a codice fiscale by Bocconi University, and that the one generated automatically through the Bocconi application and the Universitaly application is invalid.

The individual tax file number (codice fiscale) is an instrument by which to identify persons in their relations with Italian public institutions and ministries and is issued by the Tax Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate). It can be requested from abroad both by Italian and foreigners through the consular office.
The tax number is issued immediately upon application through Fisconline, an on-line service of the Tax Agency, and a card bearing the number is subsequently sent by mail.

In addition, you will need a codice fiscale in order to open a bank account or apply for a mortgage. Obtaining utilities, insurance policies and of course, filing tax returns and payment also require your codice fiscale.

Where the letters in your surname and given name(s) permit, the consonants form the first six characters of the tax code. When you apply for a codice fiscale make sure your given name(s) and surname match your passport. For example, if your name is Mary-Ann Duggan but, your passport shows your name as Mary A Duggan, your application for your Italian tax code should match the information in your passport.

The Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzie delle Entrate) issues the codice fiscale. Italian nationals are given a number at birth, and non-nationals moving to Italy can request one at any point. Internationals who apply for a codice fiscale receive a plastic card specifying their number within a couple of weeks of the acceptance of their application.

Your specific 16-digit codice fiscale number is generated based on your name, and date and place of birth, and is totally unique to you. This use of your personal information means the Italian Revenue Agency and official government bodies can easily identify you when you carry out legal actions such as commencing work and paying taxes. The unique number can also be cross-referenced by other organizations, such as banks and companies.

Technically, a codice fiscale is required by anyone planning to stay in Italy for longer than three months. In practice, anyone who lives in Italy for a meaningful amount of time will need one. This includes students moving to the country to study and children relocating with their parents.

A completed application form and some identification will be required. Valid forms of ID include passports, ID cards issued by an Italian municipality, and residence permits. Ultimately, non-EU citizens need to show evidence that they have the right to stay in Italy before they can receive a codice fiscale.

Online stores or online ticket sales services based in Italy may request an Italian tax code before any purchase can be made. No codice fiscale, no ticket for an interesting attraction, or no interesting wine from a producer in Italy.

What does this mean to anyone creating a codice fiscale to shop on Italian websites? Well, by creating a codice fiscale, they are probably not (but I need to ask lawyers about this and will do) breaking any Italian laws because they are a) not Italian and b) not resident in Italy.

Before explaining how to use an online system to create a codice fiscale, be aware that if you ever need a real Italian tax code, the one you create using the system mentioned here may not be 100% accurate.
