should we.... I wonder?

Church Bells for Copenhagen Summit. The World Council of Churches has called on churches around the world to ring their bells or use their drums, gongs or whatever their tradition offers to call people to prayer and action in the face of climate change on Sunday, 13 December. By sounding their bells or other instruments 350 times, participating churches will symbolize the 350 parts per million that mark the safe upper limit for CO2 in the atmosphere according to many scientists. As each group starts their own observation of the 13 December event at 3 p.m. local time, a chain of chimes and prayers will be stretching in a time-line from the South Pacific – where the day first begins and where the effects of climate change are already felt today – to Copenhagen and across the globe. For more information on the bell ringing campaign see http://www.bellringing350.org.

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 23rd Mission Plan Update!

The Word attachment to this e-mail includes:

  • sample intercessions for this weekend’s Feast of the Reign of Christ / Christ the King.
  • Mission Plan “good news” stories for you to paste into Sunday bulletins or pew sheets.
  • Topics, dates and places forthcoming workshops, especially next week’s session on “Really Welcoming Churches” to help our hospitality.
  • Resources for Inspirational Leadership and Reaching Out in Loving Service.
  • Prayer points for the Mission Plan (and please feel free to send in local mission initiatives that you would be glad to have others pray for around the Diocese).

We ask parish clergy, especially, to forward this e-mail to members of your lay leadership groups.  We are building up a good database of people keen to learn and grow through the Mission Plan, and we are accumulating contact details of as many people as possible to receive these Updates directly.

If you have received this e-mail because someone else has forwarded it to you, and you would like to get the next one in your own right, please click here:  missi...@perth.anglican.org , and send, along with your name, worshipping community and other contact information.  Mission Plan Administrative Assistant, Tania Tan, will put you on the list.

With blessings from

Marcus Edwards, Elizabeth Smith and Tania Tan,

Mission Plan Office.

While my sympathies are certainly with the issue, i have several reservations and at least one practical difficulty to raise. My questions are to the point of how effective an action it is, the alienating or polarising potential within the parish and the number of rings(350!). However if these were not an issue for others I would quite like to do it on Sunday 13 dec at 3pm. The practical issue is that the bell has been disassembled and is in the storeroom and took 4 strong men great exertion to be placed there. What do others think? X Christabel

For what it's worth, I concur with Christabel's comments entirely.

And for what it's worth (which I grant may not be much) - if I was still in the parish I would be profoundly alienated by what is a deeply political action.  You know it was things like this apart from my theological leanings, that left me no where to go but away.  Don't do it.

We think it would be really great to be part of this event – if it is not feasible to get the bell, could we use a drum instead?

As we had an irate neighbour come to the Fair threatening to call the police if the drumming was not stopped immediately, this may cause more angst ..... let's keep thinking ...

Not sure what I think about whether we participate in this activity or
not, but an irate neighbour threatening to call the police is not
something I think we should let deter us IF it's the 'right' thing to
do. (And this is from one who really doesn't like drumming!) A church
fete getting reported to the police? There's got to be a sitcom
potential in that.
If we were to participate then we could forewarn the neighbours via
their letterboxes. The noise wouldn't be in the middle of the night and
would be within a set amount of time. Givine that people put up with
noisy traffic on Hampton Rd, and all kinds of other noises, I think
there is much more to this neighbour's complaint than drums. She may be
fed up with the amount of dust and building noise going on at the
moment. This can be very annoying. but likewise there will be an
endpoint to that.
I deny completely that I was the irate neighbour.
