'What do we mean by "virgin"? It may help to examine those ways in
which we use the word that are not directly concerned with sex. We
speak of "virgin forest" as being one in which the powers of nature are
untrammelled and untouched by man.... Thus in this sense the word
'virgin' does not mean chastity, but the reverse, the pregnancy of
nature free and uncontrolled.' John Layard (Quoted in John Shea -
'Starlight: Beholding the Christmas Miracle all year Long'.
John Shea then comments: 'In this perspective virginity suggests a
natural pregnancy from divine fecundity. The virgin is one whom God
makes fruitful without human aid.'

'Virgin' used in the sense of unspoiled.......but holding the promise of
fruitfulness and creation. Mary's state as she carries God's gift to the
world.........every woman who carries a child to be born as God's gift.
I love Christmas and all that it holds.........
Thanks Gabby for the constant reminders of what its all about.
X Kim
ps
I can't help a little giggle at the word 'fecundity'.....silly really.
