It was Sunday and Mr. A Joseph sat immersed in his thoughts.
His family was based at Bhopal. He was a MBA graduate in finance and
he joined a public sector bank as a probationary officer soon after
graduation. He did not prefer joining MNCs as he wanted job security.
His decision was also influenced by his father, who was in government
service. After 4-5 years, he married Dr. Sneha. Usually medicos prefer
medicos as life partners. But Sneha and Joseph knew each other from
childhood and their families were friends for four decades. His wife
runs a clinic and also works at the local hospital. In due time her
medical practice became quite a success and she became quite well know
as a child specialist. She started earning almost four times as much
as him.
At his alumni meet, Mr.Joseph met some of his classmates who joined
MNCs. He envied their lavish lifestyle and their high pay packages and
wondered whether he made a mistake by joining a public sector firm. He
also wanted to shift to an MNC and started applying to various firms.
He did not discuss his decision with his wife. He got an offer from an
MNC in Mumbai which he accepted. He told his decision to his wife who
tried to discourage him from shifting. She said that they were
comfortable and settled in Bhopal and that she could not shift to
Mumbai. He did not heed to his wife and joined the MNC. He justified
his decision by saying that he was paid three times as much as he was
currently and that every year his salary would increase. He could
become CEO in ten years, whereas he would retire in the middle
management in the current company. Two years later he started
wondering whether his decision was right.
Just then the phone rang. It was his wife who told him that their son
had done reasonably well in CAT. He started wondering about his
decision again.
