Connection recovery patterns

The current connection recovery strategy in our app is (mostly) to tear down the connection object and create a new one. While this approach works and it is simple to implement it has downsides and it takes some time to reconnect. What are some recommended connection recovery patterns? Are there any recommended implementations on https://github.com/webrtc/samples ?
