As a follow-up to our previous announcement regarding evaluating Rust in WebRTC, we are sharing an update on our progress and upcoming changes.

Current Status

Build tooling support and initial Rust targets are now present in the codebase . The GN build argument rtc_rust controls whether Rust targets are enabled. The current state of Rust support in WebRTC is documented in the rust-in-webrtc page.

Upcoming Changes

  • Now: rtc_rust=true is enabled by default in GN, but Rust components are only linked into test targets, not production libraries.

  • Soon: We will link one Rust component via a cxx bridge into a production C++ library by default. If it breaks, set rtc_rust=false to use a C++ fallback.

  • Future Requirement: Setting rtc_rust=false is a temporary transition fallback. It will eventually be removed, at which point Rust support will be required to build WebRTC.

Action Requested

If you maintain a downstream build or embed WebRTC, please ensure your build environment supports Rust and test building with rtc_rust=true.
