Time for a 0.5 release

Hi,

would anyone mind if I cut a 0.5 release? The version number is, of
course, subject to discussion. We may as well call it 0.5-alpha, or
whatever, to indicate preliminary status.

IMHO all releases so far have been alpha level stuff anyway, don't
bother with labeling it anything else but 0.5.

i think dot releases are better than alpha ones for this kind of thing

release often, release early
