Salut,

Je mets tout le monde en copie sur ce sujet-là pour qu'on soit au courant - je vais répondre enfin à Heikko qui est si gentil (bon il a aussi un peut d'intérêt dans l'affaire, soyons clairs !).

Ok pour les infos, merci.

Écris aux gens avec qui tu as eu contact à Paga (et mets-nous en copie svp) pour qu'ils mettent de côté le lost and found pour nous, ça devrait pas leur poser de soucis. C'est vraiment dommage de ne rien retirer de Paga même, surtout qu'ils s'étaient un peu investis pour un article dans le talking fish non ?

hello Rodrigue,

en fait pas de disques recoltés a Paga cet annee, car le carton Disc4all s'est melangé avec le lost&found... :-(

Par contre je confirme que Heiko est super sympa et nous a file un gros volume de vetements: tout un apparel de l'equipe Skogs (maillot et short) + des vestes

c'est bien moi qui les ai et ils iront au Mali le 3nov. on compte filer le lot equipe a l'equipe qui va gagner le tournoi et puis pour le reste (veste,...) on ne sait pas trop encore.

J'avais dit a Heiko que je ferai un post sur ce don gaia/jump&reach sur le blog Mali mais je n'ai pas eu le temps.je pense que je le ferai avant de partir (et je lui enverrai le lien). et ensuite je lui enverrai des photos des joueurs avec les vetements.

super initiative de sa part en tout cas de recuperer des discs au champ.allemand.

J'ai envoyé un mail le we dernier aux suisses pour faire pareil, mai sje n'ai pas encore eu de reponse.

Hi Heiko !

Sorry for the delay in replying to you, I was trying to catch up with Amandine on what happened at Paga and time just went by !!!
The goods have made their way back to France fine, and thanks so much for giving them to us.

They will go to Mali on November 3rd and Amandine will make good use of the skogs shirts there, they will serve as a prize in a tourney organised there. We have a little DFA expedition to Mali in November to try and keep the thing alive there, with a girl (Noémie) who's going to stay there for work for 6 months so we hope she'll be able to make that Ultimate really exists in Mali by itself.

Remind us to send you some photos if we forget because I am sure photos will be taken.

Hi Sebastian !

Thanks for the all the info. We have a meeting tonight and will talk about your project, it's exactly the kind of initiative we try to support !

Our main objective is to try and acheive something that lasts, otherwise the efforts, time, and means put into the initiative are lost and it's a bit of a shame. Your friend friend being a native is a very good point and him having reguslar access to a group of kids in a controled environment (the school) as well. 8 years old might be a bit young but 14 is a great age. From our experience, kids around 15 is the best public to learn Ultimate: the discs aren't too big for their hands and they are able to understand the basic tactics. Does your friend play Ultimate or does he know Ultimate ?
If not, he or someone at the school (a teacher, the sports teatcher maybe) is going to be the most important person of this project: as this person will be able to carry on training the pupils once you have left. Once you are gone you need someone to:
- take care of the discs' stock,
- run regular practices (he/she needs to understand the game, know a minimum about the rules (translating them in the local language would be a plus), have a basic schema and exercises ready to run a practice),
- organise games.
He/she would the coach, the captain, the person in charge and, very important, the main contact for you/us to follow up on the project. Internet access is therefore a good plus, if he/she can have one.

So before you arrive, you can start sending information about the game, some links to videos you think can help undestanding the game (not the big US highlights where you think Ultimate is all about diving and contacts, spiking, etc.), simplified rules, and try to find out who will be "in charge", who you will be able to rely on once you are left. If you can bring a DVD with you, it would be great, it's a great way to show and start talking about the game. Kids love it!

Kids won't be the issue, they will learn quickly and love the game. I hope you will be able to involve girls and mix boys and girls!
From our experience, during a first 3h session, starting from scratch where you first learn the throws and some simple running, catching and throwing drill, they can play a little game. You will need to act as a "referee" at the very beginning but then they should start learning the rules. The future coach as to play as well to understand the difficulties that occur when you start learning and playing games (positionning, cutting, throwing two quickly, etc.) so that he can be a better trainer later.

5 days isn't a lot but if you can teach/play with the kids and the coach every day, it's not bad.

Where we have been, we have tried to set up clubs/teams, leaving at least 10 discs to every captain. 5 discs might not be enough if you want them to be able to play for at leat 6 months or a year. Discs tend to deteriorate quickly but it depends on where they play, is it indoors, outdoors, on sand, on concrete, on dirt, on grass. Is the school based in a big city or a small village ?

A very important point to make the initiative last is emulation via "competition", tourneys. At the very beginning depending on the space available we usually play little games 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4 to then reach a 5 vs 5 on a indoor size pitch. Ideally it would be great to have two schools or two teams, two captains so that each teams has an objective: beat the other team next time! So they'll be motivated to keep on training. Setting up two teams with a game calendar - every 3 weeks for example is ideal but you probably won't have time to do all this. If you can get a decent level of play and have one person that we can get in touch with and help in the future to keep the game alive in this school, it would be a good start.

I'm not sure you had this kind of plan in mind, but our philosophy, that how we try to work.

Nice to hear from you. Thanks for your questions. I try to answer all your questions. ;-)

Last week, I called Heiko for ordering some new discs for my travel to Sri Lanka.

My plan is as following. I am going to travel to SL for 3 weeks. (2.5. - 20.5.) I am going to get an look inside into their culture and get some days of rest, because I am still wirting my final thesis. Therefore I visit a friend, who is a native. His family run some kind of primary school. I will stay there for probably 5 days and only want to play frisbee. Heiko introduce the idea of playing ultimate and introduce the spirit connected with it. Maybe, there are 10 - 15 kids between 8 and 14 years old. My friend Francis told me that 5 discs would be enough.

At the moment I live in Goettingen and I've been playing in the Team called Goettinger 7 for 2 years. I've played the 2010 national university championships in Freiburg and many tournaments like Amsterdam, As, Heidelberg. Finally I broke up, because of heavy problems with my knees. I've never tought ultimate, especially not abroad.

Heiko told me, that your organization has a stock of old discs for support such initiatives and have plenty of experience teaching kids ultimate in Africa.
Maybe, you can support me with some helpful tips regarding training routines and how to introduce the spirit quickly. Further it would be great, getting some discs. ;-)

I'll try to send you more tips in the future. I shall in fact put them all in a little doc and send the doc. It will be of good use for the next projects, other countries.
As we were discussing your project, your reply came in and we like the idea that your friend will travel back and forth from Germany to Sri-Lanka, we hope that we will set up a long lasting project !

So yes, we all agreed to go ahead with it - please Heiko, ship 10 discs to Sebastian. Sebastian or Heiko, if you could write in them or on them "Discs for all - Sri Lanka" it would be great.

I talked to my friend yesterday and he told me, that there are already plans for organizing a little tournament. I will be the only one, who knows ultimate, but I think, that somebody will enjoy his new role. ;-) I have no details about the facilities and opportunities in this larger town, but I guess it will be outdoor on dirt or grass. I think in 5 days, it won't be possible to set up a team, especially not a club. But no try, no chance... :) My friend often travel between Germany and Sri Lanka, so there is a chance to give further support in future.

Your tips are very helpful - I'll keep them in mind and I try to do it and introduce ultimate.This will be a great pleasure!!

I would like to bring 10 discs and I am going to consider all your tips. Please let me know, how you decide tonight!
