"Luck" might be too simplistic to describe what I'm discussing. Some elements of the game are truly random and uncontrollable, like fumble recoveries or the success of opposing kickers. Others are subject to massive amounts of variance because they're in small samples, like how a team performs on fourth down. From looking at the history of the NFL, we can get a sense of whether some elements of a team's performance are unsustainable and what that means for their future.
These six months were also full of laughter, befriending other patients and nurses, easier showers and less time getting ready; thanks to not having any hair, sharing my story and raising awareness on Breast Cancer on my Instagram platform MatchaAndMascara. I used my platform to try and help other cancer patients and fighters through educational posts and real-life experiences which I was living daily. I also got the opportunity to meet and collaborate with wonderful people and organizations on awareness campaigns involving the Lebanese Breast Cancer Foundation.
Interested in experiencing more eerie history with us? Immerse yourself in the mysterious and thrilling world of superstitions and folklore at our upcoming SPOOKY Night of Treasures event on Friday, October 27!
Let's begin with one of the most iconic symbols of luck: the rabbit's foot. Despite its cute appearance, this superstition has a dark history. It rose to popularity in 1584 when people would carry a rabbit's foot to spare themselves from arthritis.
Famous folklore tells the story of the Maneki Neko's creation during the Edo period. Li Naotaka and his party found shelter in Gotoku-ji Temple, beckoned by a cat. A violent thunderstorm surrounded them, but they remained safe in the temple. In later generations, the cat was immortalized as the Maneki Neko.
UNLUCKY CHARMS is a tight little short. Cute and catchy, it has enough atmosphere to carry the story and intrigue you. The design of the creature, as well as its bodywork, are appropriately creepy and haunting. The foley work was really crisp, and the little details, such as the chattering teeth were a nice touch. And the ending was lovely in its slow inevitability, as well as its conclusion.
The company's news release didn't garner much press attention at the time, most likely because of the statement that no customers seemed to have been affected as well as because the statement came out the day before the Thanksgiving Day holiday began. However, what the press release didn't say and what would have likely raised eyebrows was that the store found what appeared to be an extra computer board secretly inserted inside the stores' self-checkout machines and that it was capable of recording customer transactions and transmitting them wirelessly to thieves sitting in nearby parking lots, this Press Democrat article reported. The skimming device didn't stand out as being out of place, the service tech who found it indicated.
I haven't heard of this type of embedded skimming technology being used against store self-check out machines before. If someone has, I would be interested in a reference to the incident(s).
The story remained mostly under the press radar until Monday, when Lucky released a new press release stating that:
A story in the Marin Independent Journal also reported that self-checkouts at now 23 Lucky Supermarket were found to be tampered with, and that the company had identified some 80 employee and customer bank accounts that apparently had been compromised.
Monday's press release and subsequent news coverage of it unleashed a flood of Lucky customers who said their accounts were possibly also compromised. For instance, according to the Mercury News on Tuesday, Lucky received over 1,000 calls after the story hit the press from customers saying that they might have been victims of the skimming. At least one credit union decided to issue 4,000 new debit cards to its customers because of the incident, the Marin Independent Journal also reported.
And according to a Mercury News story from yesterday, a Lucky representative postulated that "... the tampering could have been performed by someone pretending to be using the checkout machines to buy groceries."
Whether inspired by biblical stories or the legends of ancient people, these so-called lucky numbers and unlucky numbers have different meanings to many people. Based on little more than a story, where the origin is often unknown, people will alter travel plans, delay purchases or spend their life savings on lottery tickets.

Fourteen years ago, The Buzz told the story of an 11 year old named Wiley who lost both parents within a year of one another to cancer. The story was about his move to Texas to join a large family of cousins and the amazing way things unfolded from there.
A character can be unlucky once (a car crash, crossing someone, being a victim of crime), but not twice. Often that one unlucky event is the protagonist tripping into the situation that becomes the story.
