Michael M. Cernea Travel Award for

Applied Research on Forced Displacement and Involuntary Resettlement

Description: The Michael Cernea fund offers a $750 travel award to a student interested in applied research focused on forced displacement and involuntary resettlement to attend the SfAA Annual Meeting. This award encourages justice-focused approaches to resettlement that actively involve displaced populations, including in the context of development projects and processes such as gentrification and climate-related hazards and disasters, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities and impacts of resettlement.

Eligibility: One $750 award is available to students who meet the following criteria:

  • Must have been enrolled as a student during part of the current year.
  • Must have an accepted paper abstract focused on forced displacement and involuntary resettlement as articulated in the award description for the SfAA Annual Meeting program (poster presentations are not eligible).

The award helps support travel expenses to attend the SfAA Annual Meeting.

Application: Submit a one-page statement on the global implications of displacement and involuntary resettlement resulting from development projects and processes and/or climate-related hazards and disasters, including highlighting a focus on your work and planned paper to present.

Deadline to submit: December 20th
