Natural Hazards Center, University of Colorado Boulder: Social Vulnerability, Schools, and Disaster Postdoctoral Position
The Natural Hazards Center in the Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a postdoctoral research associate for a full-time, 12-month position, with benefits, beginning as early as May 1, 2022. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, contingent on funding availability and satisfactory performance.
The person who is hired for this position will advance novel research on reducing social vulnerability to disaster and advancing social equity. In addition, the successful candidate will support the development of a new program of research focused on investments in emergency preparedness and planning in schools in the United States.
The postdoctoral research associate will work under the direct supervision of Professor Lori Peek, who is director of the Natural Hazards Center and principal investigator for this philanthropically-funded project.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have demonstrated quantitative and qualitative methodological skills with a primary focus on social vulnerability and disasters research. Ideally, the candidate will also have experience with studying schools or children in disasters. They should also have strong written and verbal communication skills; experience working with large data sets and data repository platforms; experience in disaster field studies; and a track record in natural hazards research.
A PhD in social or behavioral science or interdisciplinary area of study is required at the time of appointment.
Responsibilities
This position will contribute to the development of a database of vulnerability reduction plans, programs, and practices in the United States by drawing on insights from the social vulnerability and disaster literature, as well as state-level emergency management documents. Specifically, the candidate will be expected to contribute by advancing the following activities:
The successful candidate will also support the development of a second novel database focused on emergency management funding for school safety and student emergency preparedness activities in the United States.
