The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill two social science research positions stationed at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) located at the Earth System Research Lab (ESRL), Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) in Boulder, CO. Both positions are advertised for interdisciplinary social and/or behavioral science researchers with backgrounds in qualitative and quantitative social science research methods. Additional information about each position, along with links to the vacancy announcements, is provided below.

  • Fire Weather Testbed Social and Behavioral Science Researcher: This person will serve on a User Needs Assessment Team in support of the Fire Weather Testbed (FWT), but will also be affiliated with the Social and Behavioral Sciences Branch within GSL’s Weather Informatics and Decision Support (WIDS) Division to bring the wildfire community together with scientists, researchers, developers, operational meteorologists, decision makers, and other partners in a testbed facility. The User Needs Assessment Team will consist of one social science researcher and one meteorologist. The social science researcher will provide subject-matter expertise in the areas of mixed-method, qualitative and quantitative interdisciplinary research, and is responsible for working closely with the meteorologist member of the User Needs Assessment Team and end-users to conduct risk communication, risk perception, and decision-making research aimed at investigating and understanding the weather and climate-related information needs of members of the wildfire communities who manage wildfires and associated public safety. We are looking for someone who is interested in working with end-users of the fire weather community, which will include in-person interviews and engagement with users across the U.S.

  • Social and Behavioral Science Researcher: This position will be situated under the Social and Behavioral Sciences Branch within GSL’s WIDS Division. This person will be responsible for performing stakeholder outreach, conducting research on stakeholders’ potential use and understanding of probabilistic and uncertainty-related fire weather products, and assisting in the development of probabilistic products. The social science researcher will provide subject-matter expertise in the areas of mixed-method, qualitative, and quantitative interdisciplinary research, and is responsible for working closely with other members of the WIDS Social and Behavioral Sciences Branch, the FWT, as well as meteorologists and product developers. Research could include assessing risk communication, risk perceptions, and decision-making research aimed at understanding weather-related information needs of key partners who manage wildfires and who are tasked with public safety. This is a supervisory position that will involve close collaboration with the Federal Social and Behavioral Sciences Branch Chief.

Please note that an onsite presence at the Global Systems Laboratory in Boulder, CO, with an option for part-time telework, is desired for this position. Remote work will be considered for both, however.
