The Accidental Education Benefits of COVID-19 - Education Week
August 19, 2020  by Alfie Kohn
We've got to end harmful testing and grading practices for good, not just pause them during the pandemic, argues Alfie Kohn.

Thank you Hala for posting this article that discusses an important question.
In spite of all the negative aspects of the pandemic and the school closures, we have noticed in the past period how parents of children with disabilities, whether learning disabilities or intellectual disabilities ,  included in regular schools are less stressed, how they are less worried of having to face the everyday challenge of what will happen to my child today at school? what will he come back with? as homework to catch up with, as negative comments, as extra worries ....., how can he compete, how can he achieve, how much does he have to catch up with to be at a level comparable to his classmates
The past period where the child was working at home at his/her own pace with no comparison to others, no frustration on the child was in some aspects a relief for the parents and the child.

We need to think how these benefits can be extrapolated into the regular everyday work when schools resume as usual.

Very true,  Eglal.

The break allowed some of the hildren time to catch up, but only when the schools' Zoom sessions had stopped. Our included children with disabilities were lost in the all class sessions and were quite frustrated. So they start the remedial session with a but of a resentment, but then this totally changed when they felt the work was at their level and attentive to their learning style and pace.

Even some of our students in informal education,  who are not included in regular schools, really enjoyed their Zoom sessions and looked forward to them everyday.

However, younger children, and those who do not get vortual reality, found it quite challenging. Actually their parents were the "medium" and were getting exhausted. These children do need the inperson sessions.

All the best,

Maha
