Folks, thanks for this great sub. I am running GNUCash 4.5 now and saw that here is a newer version of GNUCash (4.8). I downloaded this version from www.gnucash.org but when I tried to run and install the exe file, I got a warning that it was about to install an app from an unknown author so I quit the installation. Has anyone had trouble with installing this version of GNUCash 4.8 and gotten a virus warning or other kind of warning? Is it safe to install? Thanks in advance.,

Hi, I've just downloaded gnucash today and trying to sort everything out. I've managed to import my bank statements and although there are some discrepancies that I can't for the life of me manage to find, forcing me to invent a 'balance' transaction to set my accounts at the right point, I'm pleased with the software so far.

Hi,
I am using gnucash on my arch partition and sometimes on my Windows partition. I noticed that the font that gnucash uses in Windows is smaller and nicer that way because it uses more screen estate.

What determines in X that gnucash uses the font it uses and how can I change it and its size? Is this dependent on the Window Manager or something to be set in "X"? I am using awesome if that info is useful.

I'm looking for information on how to read GnuCash files using python. I have read about this python-gnucash which provides Python bindings to the GnuCash library, but it takes a lot of work at the moment (e.g. dependencies, headers, etc.). The instructions are tailored for the Linux environment, and a rather old GnuCash version (2.0.x). I am running GnuCash 2.2.9. Though I can operate the Linux command line, I am running GnuCash on Windows XP.

As Chop Suey said, GnuCash 2.4 has its own database format. If you still want to use the XML files, you can use the following script to convert from XML to a database, and then write your reports on that (e.g. gnucashconvert filename.gnucash sqlite3:////home/username/export.sqlite):

Open regedit (type regedit in the run box, press ok)
Open HKEYCURRENTUSER
Expand Software then GSettings then org then gnucash
Click on the History folder to see a list of names and locations
Right click and delete all the names not in use
Gnucash will then show what you want to use in its history

Under Linux Gnucash stores its configuration using the dconf database subsystem. The best solution for Linux users is to install deconf-editor, run it of course, navigate to org -> gnucash -> history, and delete the appropriate entry(ies). You can also set the size of the history list to 0 which has the effect of disabling history.

Well, I had the same problem, tried solving with Quotes::Finance, cpan, but never really made it. So, I made a small python script to fetch prices from alphavantage for all the registered stocks and append the prices to gnucash database. It works with gnucash sqlite3 backend, but you can probably easily adapt it to other sql backends:

I want to use gnucash. However I am not familiar with the English terminalogy regarding finance. Now I wanted to start gnucash with the Dutch translation, which I believe is available for 2 reasons. Firstly the gnucash site is also in Dutch, and secondly when I look to the wiki regarding starting gnucash with a different language I see also the Dutch translation been specified.

Still no success unfortunately. However when I now tried to startup gnucash using LANGUAGE=nl gnucash I didn't get the warning The locale defined in the environment isn't supported. Falling back to the 'C' (US English) locale. However gnucash was still in English.

However, running LANGUAGE=nl_NL.UTF-8 ANG=nl_NL.UTF-8 gnucash in the terminal, does seem to work for me. Is one of these variables not set correctly in your environment? Are you missing a language-pack package that may be required for the translations to work in your language in gnucash? You may need language-pack-gnome-nl-base installed for it to work.

if you have installed localepurge package, be sure that the locale you are using is not deleted after the installation of gnucash. To check this, reconfigure localepurge, and be sure to not include your locale in the list of the ones to be deleted

Transactions explains more about account register windows andhow to enter data into them. For now, note that the parts of an accountregister window are similar to the parts of the account tree windowdescribed earlier. The Titlebar at the top contains the account name.Below that, the Menubar contains menu options related to the accountregister. Toolbar buttons simplify common data entry functions. TheStatusbar at the bottom of the window, displays some account balancescovered in Transactions. At the bottom of the accountregister window, information appears about the current location of thecursor.

GnuCash uses a tabbed model that allows you to open multiple accountregisters and reports simultaneously. Each open window (which caninclude account registers, reports, or Scheduled Transactions windows)is given a tab on this bar that you can click to view that window. Tabscan be configured in Preferences to appear along any side of the GnuCashwindow.

GnuCash creates several types of files to help ensure that your data isnot lost. If you look in the folder where your saved file resides, youmay see other files generated by GnuCash with the following extensions:.gnucash, .log, .LCK, .LNK in the same directory as yourprimary data file. What each of these files does is presented below.

Each time you save your data file, a backup copy will also be saved withthe extension .YYYYMMDDHHMMSS.gnucash. This backup file is acomplete copy of your previous data file, and the filename format refersto the data file, year, month, day and time of the backup. For example, the filename myfile.gnucash.20100414185747.gnucash indicates this isa backup copy of the file myfile saved in the year 2010, April 14,at 6:57:47 p.m.

Gnucash itself does not have a language setting, the properties behind the desktop icon does not allow me to enter the language settings on launching gnucash, the dconf editor does not have a language setting for gnucash.

And /usr/share/applications/ is overridden by /.local/share/applications/. So if you still have a gnucash.desktop in /.local/share/applications/, editing the one in /usr/share/applications will have no effect.

Lubuntu uses lxde which will work with vmware 3d acceleration turned off and that allows the use of Unity. lubuntu desktop also allows you to create desktop shortcuts, which means I have my custom gnucash launchers.

However it still exibits the problem I'd described in another issue: When switching between windows in Fusion unity mode the border and shadow of the original frontmost window are still visible on top of the focused window, although the window content drops behind as expected.

A workaround for my problem with window border/shadow lingering where it shouldn't seems to be to use the dock icon to switch between the two gnucash windows. It only happens when using the mouse to bring a window into focus.
