Hello everyone,

Some folks had asked about GDC so I thought I've give a short report of events thus far.

It was a busy day on the exhibit floor, we had lots of visitors stop by with questions and to grab some swag (we have pens, t Shirts, the Director Puzzles, and we're giving away some software.)

We demonstrated several of the newest features (both those already in and previewed those coming up.) The images...

... show a demo featuring Bloom, Lens Flare, Bump maps, Normal Maps and Rigid Body Dynamics. We also featured demos with Cloth Dynamics, Character Controller & real-time shadows and reflections leveraging the new render-to-texture solution.

We spoke generally about Shockwave's role as the leader in online 3D games and celebrated the enormous plug in install base.

There were a few questions about Molehill and we let people know how happy we are that Flash is beginning to implement 3D with the new GPU access API and talked about some of the ActionScript libraries that third parties are creating to act as 3D engines for developing 3D content that will play in Flash.

We'll be back at the expo Thurs / Friday and hope to meet many old and new friends there.

Looks very cool!

Is a beta program planned soon for letting devs test out the new 3d
features and give feedback etc? I've been keeping an eye out, but
didn't see anything.

I'm slightly confused, as others i've been waiting to hear of a new
Director beta especially in regard to 3D. I noticed serveral posts
about Shockwave beta but had assumed that was, well for testing
shockwave updates not new features of Director.

This kinda feels very similar to the D8 release where shockwave was
updated prior to D8 but providing the means of accessing the quad
feature without needing to be on the D8 beta.

It just seems a bit strange to promote new features through a
shockwave beta program over a Director beta. Had I known that new 3D
features were being exposed in this fashion I would have signed up for
SW beta earlier.

Could you clarify the situation please and is there any further
information you can provide to the future updates to Director as its
all been rather quiet for some time.

NC,

I understand your confusion. Because most of the focus now is on rapid iteration, platform & browser support and modifying the 3D engine, we are doing lots of small incremental releases with new feature. Some of them are already in Shockwave (and in Director via the xtra updates.)

Others are coming in the next few months. We'd love to have you join the pre-release. I'm forwarding your note to Krishnan.

Do we need to reapply now for every beta?
There were times, when betatesters from past betas were invited.

I am asking myself now how that works, if nothing is publicly
announced or even communicated at all. Shall we write a mail to
Krishnan every week asking whether by any chance a new director beta
already started?
