Hello good people!

It's been a while .. I haven't been using Director for some time, and I just wanted to check in to hear what the status of "the new" Director is, particularly on the Mac. Last I tried out a version of v11, script editing was still unbearable. Has anything happened on that front, was a patch ever released, or is the good old dog still broken?

so you completely missed the D11.5 release? personally I don't have much
mac experience, but what I've heard is that it runs much better and
faster than the previous barely usable D11 release.
which doesn't mean that I would necessarily recomend to buy it by all
means, unless you really need a feature that D10 doesn't have (e.g.
creating native intel mac projectors).

cheers,
valentin

Hi Rasmus,

The old dog isn't dead--just limping a bit. Dir 11 was a disaster, but 11.5 was released a while back, and it's vastly improved over 11.0. It still has some shortcomings (Director always has), but 11.5 is certainly usable.

I'm also moving my projects over to 11.5. It may not be a sexy release, but there's enough stability, improvements and enhancements to justify me putting Dir2004 to rest. Also since 11.5 provides compatibility for the latest browsers and OSs, it's pretty much a must for active Director devs.

Some may argue, too little too late. But I think they managed to get Director back on the rails after it had been abandoned for nearly 5 years. If they can follow-up with a timely release that includes some sexy features (3D, mobile dev, and etc), Director could be a prominent player again. There's still a huge Shockwave install-base so compelling content can spread quickly. But I do think Director Next needs to be released soon so it isn't still stuck behind the technological curve. I think the main reason Director/Shockwave has managed to stay around so long is because the 2D and 3D engines were way ahead of their times. But the times have caught up and in some ways surpassed Director. I'm hoping with the next release it puts them back in the forefront in some fashion.

There has been extensive (and intense) discussion of this over on Direct-L. There was a group of us, including most of the people who met with Allen in Puerto Rico, who felt that Adobe was, indeed, on the right track to right the ship.

I haven't followed Direct-L for a few weeks--I'm on a long-term Flash project--but when I left, people were getting pretty discouraged, largely because of lack of communication. I hope that's changed now--I've seen Allen pop up here a couple times, so I'm hopeful. I do like Flash, but I still like Director, and hope that it can make a comeback.

Cordially,

Kerry Thompson
