Dear Search Committee Members:
I am writing to express interest in the position of Director of Education at Bolton Street Synagogue. I came across this job posting on JewishJobs.com, and was struck by how closely the job description matches what I have been looking for. I am confident that when you meet me you, too, will see that I am a perfect candidate for this position.
I moved to Baltimore just this past summer with my family after my husband secured a faculty position at JHU. For the past three years I have been home with my two young daughters, but now that we are finally settled in our new home, I have been trying to determine how and when I might re-enter the workforce. I had been hoping for something part-time, so that I might continue to spend extra time with my children, something in the field of education, and preferably something that would allow me to use my skills as a school administrator. And there you were.
My most recent employment experience is as a 5th grade general education teacher, but I have also recently completed a school administrator certificate program at The College of New Jersey where part of my requirements involved 300+ internship hours with a mentor principal. Prior to becoming a teacher in 2005, and earning a Master’s in Teaching while simultaneously teaching full time in an inner-city classroom, I worked as the Director of Camp and School Age Programs at the Washington DC JCC. In this position I hired and trained a full camp staff, oversaw all aspects of the camp program, was responsible for the budget as well as parent relations, and also ran short school break programs during the year. It was during this time that the education bug first bit me and I joined the DC Teaching Fellows.
I have assorted other Jewish education employment experience in my background in synagogues and camps, as well as an undergraduate major in Hebraic Studies. When you combine my history with Jewish education with my 5 years of classroom teaching experience (one year was at a NJ charter school that has since closed and is not listed on my resume), my school administrator training, and my distinct preference for a part-time position, I imagine you can begin to see as I did that we may be a perfect fit for one another.
I am a dedicated, hard-working, creative, engaging educator that is extremely passionate about creating meaningful educational experiences for all children. I know when you meet me you will see my potential to make a positive impact at your synagogue. I hope to hear from you soon. I can be reached most easily by email at shg...@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Sharon Green
